Scandinavia offers stunning landscapes, arctic wildlife and cultural treasures. In Norway, visit breathtaking fjords, Oslo’s impressive city, Tromsø’s magnificent cathedral or Svalbard’s remote islands in search of Arctic wildlife. Explore Denmark’s historic castles, Copenhagen highlights and Greenland’s ice shelf and indigenous cultures. In Iceland, see Reykjavik’s steaming Blue Lagoon, other geothermal wonders, thundering waterfalls and more. Visit Finland and experience Helsinki’s famous city, winter’s Christmas charm and the brilliance of the northern lights. Discover Stockholm, Sweden’s charming Gamla Stan (Old Town) and UNESCO-listed locations.
The mild weather and long days make summer an ideal season to visit the remote lands above the Arctic Circle like Denmark’s Greenland and Norway’s Svalbard or Lofoten Islands. To enjoy winter activities, search for the northern lights or the magic of a white Christmas (with a visit to Finland’s famous Santa Claus’ Village in Rovaniemi), travel between November and March. Spring blooms with wildflowers and later in the year colourful autumn leaves create an artist's palette as you travel among stunning landscapes.
Scandinavia has varied climates but experiences four distinct seasons:
Spring
Spring is from March to May, when days warm gradually with temperatures ranging from 2°C to 15°C.
Summer
Summer is from June to August with mild to warm weather, long daylight hours and temperatures ranging from 10°C to 25°C.
Autumn
Autumn is from September to November with cool, crisp air and temperatures dropping from 15°C to 5°C.
Winter
Winter, from December to February, is cold, with snow common above the Arctic Circle Temperatures range from -15°C to 5°C depending on latitude.
Pack for the season and the activities you are undertaking. During spring & autumn layer clothing for cooler mornings and warmer days. During summer, layered, breathable fabrics are advisable with the addition of waterproof gear for occasional rain. During the winter months, and the further north you venture, warm coats, thermal layers, hats, gloves and insulated boots will keep you toasty warm.
Sail through Norway’s dramatic fjords like Geirangerfjord and Sognefjord, where towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls create unforgettable scenery. Marvel at Iceland’s dramatic geothermal landscapes and explore picturesque cities like Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and more. Discover the Arctic’s midnight sun or northern lights in Tromsø and wander Copenhagen’s medieval streets or discover Helsinki’s unique architecture. Witness Arctic wildlife, from puffins and polar bears to reindeer and whales, as you cruise near the North Cape or through the Stockholm Archipelago and beyond.
Mouthwatering Scandinavian cuisine highlights fresh, local ingredients. Popular dishes you might like to try include Norway’s smoked salmon and reindeer stew, or Denmark’s Smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) and delicious pastries. While in Sweden the quintessential Swedish Meatballs are a must, along with dill-cured gravlax salmon. Taste Finland’s fresh-baked rye bread or traditional Karelian pies, and make sure to try Iceland’s slightly sour yoghurt Skyr and the fresh well rounded flavour of Icelandic lamb.
