FAQ
Frequently asked questions - China tours
What are the best things to do in China?
The historic Forbidden City in Beijing, the UNESCO-listed Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an and the classical Lingering Garden in Suzhou are iconic China destinations. For incredible natural wonders, cruise along the picturesque Yangtze River or venture to the breathtaking Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. From Shanghai’s Bund waterfront promenade to the 71-metre-tall Leshan Giant Buddha, China offers many unforgettable experiences. Check out our blog on the Best Things to do in China for even more inspiration!
When is the best time to go to China?
The best time to visit China is generally between April and May or September to October, when the weather is most comfortable with mild temperatures. Those who prefer fewer crowds should consider travelling during the shoulder seasons and avoiding national holidays, such as the Chinese New Year and Golden Week.
What is the weather like in China?
China experiences diverse climates ranging from tropical in the south to subarctic in the north. You can expect four distinct seasons, just like Australia. Spring March to May is a great time to visit central and southern regions like Guilin and Hangzhou. Temperatures are often mild and pleasant, and flowers are blooming. Summer From June to August, temperatures often exceed 30°C with hot and humid conditions, especially in Beijing and Shanghai. Southern China may also experience heavy rains due to the monsoon season. Autumn September to November is often thought of as the best time to visit, thanks to cool temperatures and clear skies. Winter From December to February, northern China experiences cold winters, while southern regions are relatively mild.
What's the time zone in China?
China operates on China Standard Time (CST) or UTC+8, and is 2 hours behind AEST. Unlike many countries, China does not observe daylight saving time, so time remains consistent throughout the year.
How long does it take to fly to China?
How long it takes to fly to China depends on what major Australian city you’re departing from. Once you’ve booked your TripADeal package, you’ll receive your travel pack approximately 4 to 6 weeks before departure. This pack will give you all the information you need, including what airline you’ll be on, any flight class upgrades you’ve purchased, and more.
How much are flights to China?
Flights to China can vary depending on your departure city, peak seasons and how far in advance you book. For your convenience, TripADeal’s Tour and Cruise packages to China include return international flights.
Do I need a visa for China?
Good news! The Chinese Government recently announced that Australian and New Zealand citizens will now qualify for visa-free travel to China. This commenced in July 2024 and applies to stays up to 15 days in China. Eligibility criteria applies and visa entry and exit conditions change regularly so it’s best to consult Smart Traveller and your nearest Chinese consulate for up-to-date eligibility criteria and information.
What currency do I need in China?

The official currency of China is the Chinese Yuan (CNY), also known as the Renminbi (RMB).

Visa/MasterCard/Amex can only be used at some hotels and is not often accepted in local restaurants and supermarkets. Whilst WeChat and Alipay are commonly used payment platforms in China at most businesses, some travellers can experience issues due to internet accessibility and other technical difficulties.

Cash is still widely accepted in China and most people still use cash on a daily basis. Therefore we recommend taking cash in either RMB (local currency) or AUD and the tour guides can assist with currency exchange in China if required. Optional tours and tipping can be paid in RMB or AUD on tour and credit card and Alipay/WeChat are not accepted.

Should I get a travel sim for China?
If you want to stay connected without relying on Wi-Fi in China, our travel experts recommend getting a local travel SIM card. Major Chinese providers like China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom offer SIM cards with extensive coverage across the country. You can easily purchase these at airports, convenience stores or mobile shops upon arrival. Alternatively, most major Australian networks such as Telstra, Vodaphone and Optus allow you to activate international roaming that covers you overseas.
What power plug do I need for China?
For China, the standard power plug is the Type A and Type I. Type A has two flat parallel pins, while Type I has 3 flat pins in a triangular arrangement. To ensure compatibility, we recommend purchasing a universal travel adapter that covers multiple plug types. This is perfect if you’ve got more TripADeal packages booked to other bucket list destinations!
Do TripADeal holiday tours to China include flights?
All TripADeal packages to China include return international flights from major destinations, including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
