Any visit to Thailand should include the vibrant streets of Bangkok and a trip south to the scenic islands of Phuket and Koh Samui. Explore the mountainous landscapes of Chiang Mai, relax on the beaches of Krabi or take a cooking class to master Thai cuisine.
From towering skyscrapers to teeming markets, there’s so much to uncover with time at leisure in Bangkok. Admire the grandeur of the Grand Palace or take a sunset cruise on the Chao Phraya River. See the 46-metre sculpture of the Reclining Buddha of Wat Pho and perhaps treat yourself to a Thai massage.
The best time to visit Thailand is generally between November and February. This is when temperatures are more comfortable and the weather is mostly dry, ideal for beach destinations and sightseeing.
The weather in Thailand varies based on the season and region you're visiting.
Northern Thailand
Regions like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai experience three main seasons. From November to February it’s cool and dry, while March to May brings hot temperatures up to 40°C. Throughout June to October you’ll likely experience the rainy season.
Central Thailand
Hotspots like Bangkok experience hot and humid weather year-round, with temperatures usually between 25°C and 35°C. The rainy season typically runs from May to October.
Southern Thailand
Popular destinations like Phuket and Krabi have a wet and dry season. From November to April, the dry season offers pleasant beach weather, while May to October is the rainy season, with temperatures around 25°C to 35°C.
Thailand operates on Indochina Time (ICT) or UTC+7, and is three hours behind AEST. Just as Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia, Thailand doesn’t observe daylight saving time.

Australian passport holders can visit Thailand without a visa for up to 30 days for tourism purposes. If you plan to stay longer, you may need to apply for a visa at a Thai Embassy or Consulate.
Visa and other entry and exit conditions change regularly, so it’s best to contact your nearest Embassy or Consulate for up-to-date information.
The official currency of Thailand is the Thai Baht (THB).
Our local guides recommend carrying local currency for most transactions, especially if you visit markets and rural areas where card payments may not be accepted.
You can easily exchange AUD at airports, banks and currency exchange counters before your trip or throughout Thailand. ATMs are also widely available across the country, offering a simple way to withdraw THB directly.
If you want to stay connected without relying on Wi-Fi, our travel experts recommend getting a travel sim when you’re in Thailand.
Popular Thai providers like AIS, TrueMove and DTAC offer SIM cards with nationwide coverage, even in rural areas. You can easily purchase these at airports, convenience stores or mobile shops in Thailand.
Alternatively, most major Australian networks such as Telstra, Vodaphone and Optus allow you to activate international roaming that covers you overseas.
When travelling to Thailand from Australia, you'll need a Type A, Type B or Type C power plug adapter.
You’ll also want to check if your device supports 220V or if a voltage converter may be necessary.
