After breakfast, you'll enjoy taking part in a guided city tour of the key sites in Lima. Firstly you'll see Huaca Pucllana (entrance fee not included), a huge archaeological site in Miraflores, one of Lima’s most popular districts. Huaca Pucllana was an important ceremonial and administrative center of the Lima culture which developed in this part of the Peruvian coast between 200 AD and 700 AD. This sacred place was built from seven stepped platforms surrounded by a plaza and large walls. It's a very impressive site and certainly not what you'd expect to find in lively Miraflores!

You'll then drive to the historic centre of Lima, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Here you'll see the beautiful Plaza de Armas (Lima’s main square) which is surrounded by impressive colonial and Republican-era buildings. Some of Peru’s most important buildings surround the square including the Government Palace, the Cathedral of Lima, the Archbishop’s Palace of Lima, the Municipal Palace and the Palace of the Union. Afterwards, you'll head to Casa Aliaga, the oldest colonial mansion in both Lima and South America. The Aliaga family have lived in the mansion since 1535, an impressive feat as few houses in the world have been occupied by the same family for so long. This fascinating house represents a passage of history in an authentic and vivid way.

After the tour, you’ll be returned to the hotel where you can enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 3 Lima - Puerto Maldonado

Today you'll embark on your Amazonian adventure so after breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Puerto Maldonado. Upon arrival, you will be met by a specialised Amazon tour representative for the start of your time in the Amazon.

Please note, due to luggage and space limitations on the boats during your stay at the Amazon, you will only be allowed to bring a small bag/suitcase with your essentials. It is highly recommended to pre-pack a smaller bag with just the essentials needed for this portion of your trip to the Amazon. The remainder of your luggage can be kept at port in Puerto Maldonado at no additional cost.

Puerto Maldonado is Peru’s capital of biodiversity and is the gateway to the Amazon. You will be transported to Puerto Capitanía, the port where your riverboat will be waiting. You'll then set sail across the Rio Bajo Madre de Dios (Winding River) until arriving at the lodge, approximately 30 kilometres away from Puerto Maldonado City. On the way to the lodge, watch out for diverse animals such as the capybaras, caimans, water turtles, herons, cormorants, carrion birds and birds of prey.

Once at the lodge, you will be welcomed with delicious Amazonian tropical fruit and a hearty lunch which is served in the rustic dining room.

In the afternoon, the specialised guide will take you on an interpretive trail to Caiman Cocha, a little lagoon where you'll have the chance to observe the black caiman and the common caiman, as well as efficient predators located at the top of the food chain. These reptiles feed on the rich water fauna of fish that inhabit the pond. In the evening you can enjoy a delicious dinner and time to share unforgettable moments at the bar, equipped with an excellent game room.

Day 4 Puerto Maldonado

After breakfast, you'll embark on a hike deep into the forest on well-maintained trails. On the way, cross the riverside to reach high-elevation forests before descending into floodable forests. During the journey, you will see a wide range of flora and fauna in the wild before arriving at the majestic Lake Apu Victor which is surrounded by immense swamps and gigantic trees. You'll then go up to an Amazonian observation deck where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the lake while observing parrots, macaws, toucans, horned screamers, hoatzins, herons, caimans, turtles and more. A wide variety of fish enters Lake Apu Victor with flooding in the rainy season so you may also spot mata mata yellow-footed turtles, the twist-necked turtle, the freshwater blenny, the kinkajou, the white-tailed deer, the Central American agoutis and the giant otter of the Amazon rainforest.

Afterwards, you'll return to the lodge for a refreshing lunch before heading on a guided tour to Monkey Island. This island shows an enormous variety of exuberant flora and hosts numerous primate specimens like the black spider monkey, the black-cap capuchin monkey, the squirrel monkey and the lion monkey. Day 6 Puerto Maldonado - Cusco - Sacred Valley

This morning you'll enjoy breakfast before departing the lodge and transferring to Puerto Maldonado Airport in preparation for your flight to Cusco. Upon arrival, a tour representative will be at the airport to meet and greet you before making a short stop in Chinchero on the way to the Sacred Valley.

Chinchero is a small picturesque town that's dedicated to the cultivation of native species and livestock. The community comprises of 50 families where the women do the weaving and the men are in charge of the farm. From here you'll drive through the rugged mountainous region with its magnificent panoramas, along roads with farms and small villages to the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Here you'll enjoy an authentic Peruvian demonstration of the ancient Andean tradition of making textiles from naturally dyed handwoven alpaca wool. Remarkably, the source for the vibrant colours is dye that comes from plants, minerals and insects. Take time to wander around the complex and shop for souvenirs among the fine textiles and other local treasures while interacting with the locals and bargaining the prices of handicrafts.

Overnight: Hotel Sonesta Posada del Inca Yucay or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7 Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a beautiful valley that is located north of Cusco, it's also called the Urubamba Valley as it extends from Pisac to Ollantaytambo while being irrigated by the Urubamba River.

Civilizations have inhabited this valley since at least 800 BC when the Chanapata civilization arrived here to make use of the rich soil so today you'll embark on a full-day tour to discover the fascinating archaeological sites of civilizations past. You’ll first head to magnificent Moray, although the journey is about 1.5 hours, you’ll drive through spectacular Andean scenery while passing yellow wheat fields, picturesque traditional villages and snow-capped mountains. Arriving at Moray, your guide will show you around the three amphitheatre-like terraced structures. These terraces, which are carved in a circular series to create a bowl shape, are believed to have been used as a testing ground for various crops to find the most optimal growing conditions. It’s an incredible sight and gives real insight into the genius of the Inca Empire.

After exploring Moray you’ll head on to Maras to see the amazing salt evaporation ponds which were used by the Incas and pre-Inca civilizations. Here you'll find more than 3,000 salt pools carved into the mountainside which catch highly salty water as it emerges from a spring in the mountain. The ponds catch this water where it then slowly evaporates, leaving just the salt behind. This is collected via a communal process and is most famously used to make sal de Maras, the famous pink table salt. It’s an incredible sight looking down across the salt ponds which look like they are covered in snow or ice.

After lunch (not included), you’ll drive another 30 minutes to the wonderful Inca town and archaeological site of Ollantaytambo. This was the royal estate of the Inca emperor Pachacuti who conquered the region and built the town and a ceremonial center. Here you’ll have the opportunity to explore these magnificent ruins, visit the amazing Temple of the Sun and see massive blocks of rock that were perfectly carved and polished by master Inca stonemasons. Ollantaytambo is a fine example of Inca agricultural construction and hydro-engineering with a complex series of stone water fountains, channels and agricultural terraces which were organised by elevation to create different microclimates for crop experimentation. Walking to the town square, you’ll have great views of the ruins above you as well as Inca granaries and storehouses built on the sides of the surrounding mountains. Here you can also watch the daily life of Ollantaytambo locals where many people still wear traditional dress. After your tour, you will be returned to your hotel where the remainder of your afternoon will be at your leisure.

Overnight: Hotel Sonesta Posada del Inca Yucay or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8 Machu Picchu

Today you'll have an early start at approximately 06:00 when you will be picked up and taken to the station to board the train to Aguas Calientes. The train leaves approximately at 07:05 and the journey takes two hours as you pass through river canyons and rolling hills. Afterwards, your guide will pick you up from the train station where you’ll then walk to the bus depot for a short bus ride up the road to Machu Picchu.

Please note, for this section of the trip, due to luggage and space limitations on the train, you will only be allowed to bring an overnight bag to Machu Picchu. It is highly recommended to pre-pack a smaller bag with just the essentials needed for this overnight portion in Machu Picchu Pueblo, the night prior to arrival. The remainder of your luggage will be securely kept with the tour operator in Cusco at no additional cost.

Pass through the gates into the Machu Picchu archaeological site where you’ll be guided on a two-hour tour to the most famous and spectacular parts of the extensive archaeological complex. These include the House of the Guardian, Intihuatana, Temple of the Sun, Sacred Plaza and other key locations. As you walk around, you’ll have spectacular views across the agricultural terraces of Machu Picchu to the surrounding mountains and plunging gorges.

Once you've finished your tour, you’ll take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes where you can relax and have lunch (not included). The remainder of your afternoon will be spent at leisure to explore Aguas Calientes where you will spend overnight.

Please note: The departure time for the train is subject to change, final times will be reflected in your Travel Pack.

Day 9 Cusco City Tour

This afternoon, you'll board the train back to Ollantaytambo where you'll be picked up and taken on a guided tour of beautiful Cusco. Here you’ll explore the wonderful Koricancha which is next door to Santo Domingo Church. The Koricancha was the most sacred and important temple in the Incan Empire as it boasted walls of gold and life-size statues of plants and animals made of pure gold and silver. Unfortunately, this wealth was stripped out by the Spanish conquistadors. Afterwards, you'll head to Cusco Cathedral which is located on the Plaza de Armas. This was built between 1560 and 1654 on top of the foundations of an existing Incan temple so this spectacular cathedral houses many works of art by the Cusco School of painters with a main altar and pulpit covered in gold and silver relief work.

The next stop is the imposing Incan fortress of Sacsayhuaman which sits on a hill above Cusco where you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the city. Here you'll see some of the finest examples of Incan stonework and construction including massive rocks that were carefully cut and perfectly fitted together to form the walls. After exploring Sacsayhuaman, you'll head up the hill to the Tambomachay Archeological Complex. Although the exact purpose of this site is unknown, it's thought to have functioned, at least in part, as an Incan spa.

After the tour, you will be returned to the hotel where you will enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. Alternatively, you can book a folklore dinner show.

Optional Activity: Folklore Show & Dinner - $65 per person

Head to Tunupa restaurant, located just near the central Plaza de Armas of Cusco (a short walk from the hotel) and experience a fabulous buffet dinner of a large selection of Peruvian dishes featuring meat, fish and vegetables. The night becomes more enjoyable when the traditional dance show begins as you can get involved with folk, traditional and classical music. Enjoy the sounds of Andean instruments while sharing the dance floor with the dancers for a memorable experience.

After breakfast, enjoy a free day to explore Cusco at your own leisure.

Optional Tour: Rainbow Mountain - $185 per person

Duration: Full Day.

You'll be collected from the hotel around 05:00 for a three-hour drive passing through wonderful Andean scenery along the South Valley. Stop for breakfast along the way before continuing to the trailhead at the village of Quesiuno which sits at approximately 4,326 metres (14,189 feet) above sea level. From here, you'll set off on the trek which follows a stream where you're likely to see herds of alpacas and llamas as they graze on the hillsides. You’ll have consistent views of the sacred Ausangate Mountain as you pass occasional villages where the old traditions of the Andes are still very much alive.

Stop for a packed lunch and enjoy the scenery as you eat and relax before heading on. Pass by the remote potato fields of this rugged region and keep an eye out for local wildlife. If you’re lucky you might see chinchillas and vicuñas, one of the two wild South American camelids that live in the high alpine areas of the Andes. As you near your destination, you’ll start to see many red mountains. After trekking for a total of about five hours, you’ll finally reach Vinicunca, the spectacular Rainbow Mountain. At a breathtaking 5,020 metres (16,466 feet) above sea level, you’ll start exploring the series of coloured mountains and enjoy time to soak in the view and take photos.

Once you’ve had time to take in all the magnificent sights, you’ll set off on our return trek which will take three to four hours. Private transport will be waiting at the end to take you back to Cusco, again taking about three hours. You should arrive in Cusco at 16:00 at which point you’ll be dropped off at your hotel.

Overnight: Sonesta Cusco or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 11 Cusco - Puno

After breakfast at approximately 06:30, you’ll be taken from your hotel to the bus station to embark on a fully-guided tour of four amazing sites including Andahuaylillas, Raqchi, La Raya and Pukara.

Andahuaylillas, also known as the Sistine Chapel of South America, is a beautiful example of popular Andean religious art. From here, you can visit this magnificent building to marvel at the collection of canvases of the Cusco School as well as murals attributed by Luis de Riaño, the “Virgin Of The Assumption”, a majestic organ, silver jewellery and a baroque altar.

Raqchi is the hidden jewel between the volcanoes and was once a pre-Hispanic settlement of the Kanchi people. The town is one of the most important constructions of the Inca Empire, characterised by its peculiar and extraordinary architectural technique, totally different from other constructions of the time.

La Raya is the halfway point between Cusco and Puno as well as being the highest point at 4,334 metres above sea level. The landscapes here are stunning and you'll find typical Andean animals like the llama, alpaca and vicuña. It's also the geographic border between the two cultures of Quechua and Aymara.

Finally, you'll arrive at Pukara where you’ll visit the most important and oldest ceremonial centre of the altiplano. This is also known as the “Red Fortress” due to the red granite used in the construction of these ruins. Your tour then ends in Puno where you'll arrive in the late afternoon to enjoy the remainder of the evening at leisure.

Overnight: Hotel Royal Inn Puno or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch

Day 12 Lake Titicaca

After breakfast, you'll continue along a cultural tour to Lake Titicaca. This is the largest lake in South America with the highest navigable body of water, bordering Peru and Bolivia it's home to rural and traditional Peruvian communities. From here you’ll board a boat to the island of Taquile, one of Peru's most beautiful islands where the traditional way of life is still very much alive. Here you'll meet master weavers of this ancient Andean community whose textiles are considered among the best in the country.

After visiting the weavers and exploring the beautiful island, you'll head down to the small port on Taquile and take a boat towards the Chucuito Peninsula. This is in the Aymara region of Lake Titicaca and represents the communal identity of the Peruvian-Bolivian altiplano. Here you’ll encounter the small and rarely visited rural community of Luquina where you’ll enjoy a wonderful buffet lunch at a local fisherman’s house.

In the afternoon, as you head back towards Puno, you'll visit the Floating Islands of the Uros people. You’ll be amazed by the scale of these floating reed island constructions, built originally by the Uros for defensive reasons so that should a threat appear, their island homes could be moved to a safer location. The islands are made from the totora reeds that grow around the lake, you'll learn that each island is in a constant state of reconstruction as old reeds are replaced by new. Stepping onto the islands is quite an experience as the springy reed floor feels strange beneath your feet. You’ll get to explore the main island and see the houses, watchtowers and other structures that are all built out of reeds. One of the locals will give a brief presentation about how the islands are made and you'll have the opportunity to meet one of the local families to see how they live. Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Lima
Lima is usually described as mild and warm throughout the year without much noteworthy rain, making Lima one of the driest capitals in the world. The average temperatures range from 18°C to 28°C.

Cusco
Cusco has a subtropical highland climate due to its elevation (3500m above sea level). It is generally dry and temperate, with two defined seasons. The dry season lasts from May to August, with abundant sunshine and occasional nighttime freezes; July is the coldest month with an average of 9.7°C. The wet season lasts from December to March, with night frost less common; November averages 13.3°C. Temperatures usually range from 0.2°C to 20.9°C.

Puno
As Puno is located at such a high elevation (3830m above sea level), it experiences more extreme weather conditions than would be expected for its tropical latitude. The average annual temperature is about 8.4°C, and the weather never gets overly warm. During the winter months from June to August, night-time temperatures usually drop well below 0°C. At this high altitude, the rays of the sun are very strong. Most of the annual precipitation falls during the southern hemisphere summer, with the winter months being very dry.

FLIGHTS
Seat Selection & Frequent Flyer Points
We do not arrange seat selection. It is essential to highlight that some airlines do not allow pre-selected seats. We strongly suggest you contact the airline directly with seating allocation requirements and/or arrive at the airport earlier to arrange your seating. While we do not add frequent flyer member details to bookings, you can do this directly with the airline once you have your flight information.

Passport Validity
Customers must provide valid passport details either at the time of purchase or no later than 90 days before the departure date. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the booking. Customers will be responsible for any costs and fees incurred in this instance.

COACH TOUR
Meals
For meals not included, the tour leader (when available) will offer assistance with reservations, suggestions and directions to local restaurants. It is your responsibility to notify us of any dietary requests/requirements.
Please note: We will do our best to meet your requests/requirements; however, we cannot guarantee that we will always be able to.

Luggage
You will be responsible for all your personal belongings whilst on tour. You must carry your own luggage from the vehicle to the hotel room and back to the vehicle. The driver will assist with the uploading and unloading of bags from the vehicle.

OTHER
Mobility
If you require wheelchair access please contact our friendly sales and service team to inquire on your behalf.

Fitness Level Required
A leisurely level of fitness will be required. Leisurely is described as light walking, including up multiple stairs and occasional hiking which may involve uneven surfaces. Able to travel unassisted and get on and off vehicles and small boats. Suitable for most fitness levels and mobility. For the Rainbow Mountain optional tour, the fitness level required is active/demanding. Active and demanding as described as the following:
• Active: Some high-altitude trekking, off-road biking or high-grade kayaking. More strenuous activities, suitable for a good fitness level and for guests who exercise regularly. More fast-paced activities and walking on uneven surfaces.
• Demanding: A high fitness level is required to undertake these activities, which may include high-altitude trekking for anywhere between four to seven hours per day for an extended number of days. Recommended for active travellers with some previous trekking experience.
Please note: If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel.

High Altitude Illness
Altitude illness occurs when there is a lack of oxygen in the air at high altitudes. Altitude illness will affect some travellers, with no apparent regard to age, gender or physical condition. If you have any concerns please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel. It is generally recommended to take the time to acclimatize properly, which is why you’ll have a few days before and after your trek to properly acclimatize.
Please note: Inoculations may be required to enter the country visited, along with re-entry into Australia after your visit. It is your responsibility to consult with your travel doctor for up to date medical travel information well before departure.

Yellow Fever
A valid international certificate of vaccination against Yellow Fever is required in many countries. You may need to present this on arrival at the airport or border crossing. Some countries will refuse entry if you are unable to present your certificate. It's also common for your home country to request a Yellow Fever certificate upon arrival. You must check with your doctor well before leaving home about the Yellow Fever requirements for the countries you'll be visiting.

Gratuities/Tipping
Land
Gratuities (tips) are not included for the services of the tour leader (when available) and driver throughout the tour. The recommended tip is $10-20 AUD per person per day. This covers the guide/leader and the driver and will be collected on tour.

Sightseeing
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Shopping
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts. Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

Peru
A tourist visa for Peru is not required if travelling on an Australian Passport.

Chile (Stopover & Transit)
Australian passport holders visiting Chile for tourism purposes must apply for a single or multiple tourist visas. Visas must be lodged through the SAC CIUDADANOS portal only.
If your travel includes transiting through Chile, you should contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Chile to confirm if you'll need a visa.
If you transit in Chile without a visa and miss your connecting flight, you won’t be able to pass the immigration point. You'll be required to remain airside and not leave the airport until a new onward flight has been arranged. Australians have previously been required to remain airside for several days due to missed flight connections.

United States (Transiting)
If travelling on an Australian passport, an ESTA (visa waiver) for the USA is a strict requirement when travelling to or flying through the USA. Once a USA ESTA visa waiver is issued it is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires (whichever is sooner) and will allow multiple entries into the USA. For information on ESTA eligibility or to apply, please visit https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/.

Please note: Due to recent changes to USA immigration policies, TripADeal recommends all travellers visit US Customs & Border Protection.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.
Please note:
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected. For more information or advice visit https://www.tripadeal.com.au/travel-insurance.
