Day 5 Milford Sound, New Zealand (Scenic Cruising)

Milford Sound, or Piopiotahi (its Maori name), sits on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island and was first called the Eighth Wonder of the World by none other than Rudyard Kipling, who had seen some pretty wonderful places. As you sail up the 15-kilometre-long sound, with soaring snow-topped peaks looming above - the tallest reaches an altitude of 1,517 metres - you'll understand Kipling's enthusiasm.

Although it is called a sound, it is technically a fjord - a narrow inlet created by glacial erosion over thousands of years. While its geological history is long, its human history is not. It is believed that the Maori first explored the sound, and the rest of the area that is now part of Fiordland National Park, around 1,000 years ago. Captain Cook followed up with his exploration in 1770.

The land remains pristine when Fiordland National Park, New Zealand's largest national park, was established in 1952. While many walking trails cross the park, the most breathtaking views are arguably those from the water, with the sheer rock faces looming above your ship as you sail through this majestic landscape.

Continue your day scenic cruising Fiordland National Park, on the southwestern coast of the South Island. This stunning 12,000-square-kilometre park encompasses mountains, lakes, fjords and rain forests.

Day 6 Dunedin (Port Chalmers), New Zealand

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 18:00

Much of New Zealand feels like England, by way of Polynesia. There are a few exceptions, though, such as the town of Akaroa, a former French settlement, or the distinctly Scottish city of Dunedin, named after the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh. After Dunedin was founded in 1848, city surveyor Charles Kettle attempted to impose Edinburgh's New Town grid plan on the growing city. But the Otago Peninsula's hilly landscape proved challenging as Dunedin has one of the world's steepest streets (Baldwin Street). The volcanic remnants around the harbour make for a dramatic backdrop.

Dunedin's prominence during the gold rush in the late 19th century resulted in many grand Victorian and Edwardian buildings. Thanks to the beautiful University of Otago (the country's oldest), there's a large student population to keep the city vibrant and modern. Dunedin's heritage is always proudly on display, from the magnificent Dunedin Railway Station and restored Larnach Castle, to the fascinating Toitu Otago Settlers Museum provides a glimpse into the lives of early residents.

Outside the city, the Otago Peninsula is lined with scenic beaches and home to rare birdlife like the royal albatross and yellow-eyed penguin.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 7 Timaru, New Zealand

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 15:00

Strolling along the city’s hilly streets and past its Edwardian and Victorian buildings and green spaces, you might not guess that Timaru was built on the lava flows of a now-extinct but vividly named volcano, Mount Horrible.

Timaru’s own name comes from the Maori Te Maru, which means "place of shelter." Chief among Timaru’s charms are its parks and gardens. As if the backdrop of the Southern Alps wasn't enough, a rose garden, boardwalk and beach also enliven the already beautiful waterfront of Caroline Bay, named for a 19th-century whaling ship. Up the hill, the scenic reserve of Centennial Park offers picturesque picnic spots and walking and biking trails. Timaru showcases New Zealand and Maori culture at the stellar Aigantighe Art Gallery and South Canterbury Museum.

If you have time to venture beyond Timaru and are interested in learning about the area's truly ancient history, the fascinating Te Ana Maori Rock Art Centre, about half an hour outside the city, exhibits rock art made by early Maori settlers more than 700 years ago.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 8 Wellington, New Zealand

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

New Zealand's cool little capital is located at the southern tip of the North Island, meaning it's blessed with a beautiful waterfront, fresh seafood and unpredictable weather. So famously tempestuous is Windy Welly that visitors quickly learn not to go outside without an umbrella and will spend more time than usual talking about the weather. Politics is a hot topic too, with government workers buzzing about the Beehive, as the distinctive Parliament building is colloquially known.

Wellington is also known for culture and cuisine. Learn about Maori history and Kiwiana at Te Papa, the national museum; go behind the scenes of the Lord of the Rings movies made in Wellywood; and wash down a plate of chilled bluff oysters with a crisp sauvignon blanc at a Cuba Street restaurant.

Gourmands are spoiled for choice with the city's many coffee micro-roasteries, craft breweries, innovative chefs and artisanal markets. Fortunately for your waistline, it’s also a terrific city for walking, hiking and cycling, with a compact historic core hugged by green hills and dotted with impossibly perched houses. They say you can't beat Wellington on a good day—but visitors will soon discover that even if it's wet and windy, it's always a good day to be in Wellington.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam or similar

Day 9 Cruising

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 10 Tauranga (Rotorua), New Zealand

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 18:30

The curved shoreline of the Bay of Plenty, known in Maori as Te Moana-a-Toi, is home to incredible surfing, white-sand beaches and New Zealand's only active marine volcano. Tauranga, with 130,000 residents, is the largest city on the Bay of Plenty and fifth largest in New Zealand. The city offers visitors a number of water-focused activities, like sailing and kayaking, as well as drier alternatives such as shopping and people-watching at a café in the Historic Village.

Tauranga is also a great jumping-off point for exploring nearby beaches and Te Puke, the kiwifruit capital of the world, as well as a wealth of Maori cultural sites. The world-famous geothermal wonderland of Rotorua, nicknamed Sulphur City, has been a major Polynesian spa resort town since visitors first arrived in the late 1800s. In Maori, roto means lake and rua means two, but Rotorua actually comprises 18 lakes, plus an incredible redwood forest.

For the best views, take the gondola up to Skyline Rotorua, a recreation complex atop Mount Ngongotaha. Other day trips you should consider are a boat ride through the incomparable glowworm caves of Waitomo or an unforgettable tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata - a must for all Tolkien fans.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 11 Auckland, New Zealand (Overnight)

Arrive: 07:00 - Overnight

Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city, is multicultural and cosmopolitan, with sizeable Polynesian, Asian and Maori populations enriching its history and broadening the palate. Internationally known chefs and fashion designers have made neighbourhoods like Ponsonby, Newmarket and Parnell world-class destinations for shopping and dining.

You're never far from water attractions in New Zealand and this is especially true in Auckland where it's not unheard of for downtown workers to go kayaking on their lunch break. The once-gritty port has been transformed into inviting public spaces and buzzing nightclubs, with sailboat charters and regular ferry connections waiting to whisk visitors around the harbour for sightseeing.

Start your day sipping a flat white while you plan your explorations: art gallery crawl, winery tour or volcano hike? It's possible to do all three without losing sight of the Sky Tower, one of Auckland's top tourist attractions, from which you can get a bird's-eye view of the gateway to Aotearoa.

Your ship docks in Auckland overnight so you can explore more of this city.

Day 12 Auckland, New Zealand

Day 13 Waitangi (Bay of Islands), New Zealand

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00
(Tender)

Historic sites, including the place where the most important treaty in New Zealand's history was signed, winemaking, golfing, sailing and scenic beauty all combine to make the Bay of Islands one of this South Pacific nation's most compelling regions. Located at the top of the North Island, the area has a subtropical microclimate that gives it an abundance of flora and fauna and a lengthy beach season. Comprising 144 islands between Cape Brett and the Purerua Peninsula, the Bay of Islands requires a few days to fully explore.

Waitangi is home to the region's historic treaty grounds and one of three main towns with celebrated sights. The others are Kerikeri, with its historic buildings and vineyards, and the notorious seafaring past of Russell. Those who'd rather experience the Bay of Islands' breathtaking nature can walk amid majestic kauri trees, descend into glowworm caves or spy on whales and dolphins (or even swim with the latter) in one of New Zealand's sunniest and most picturesque playgrounds.

Day 16 Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart 17:00

Located on the northern coast of Tonga’s largest island, Tongatapu, Nuku'alofa, the financial and commercial hub of Tonga is a charming, idiosyncratic city with a lively infrastructure combining a slew of pleasant cafés and restaurants with historic churches and long, stunning beaches. It’s an easy city to navigate on foot, and the surrounding island can be explored equally easily with a car or motorbike, both of which can be rented locally.

Head to the water and take advantage of some of the world’s finest snorkelling, or venture out to sea on a whale-watching charter between June and November (or watch for free from several local viewpoints). Land options can include a round of golf or a cultural experience such as the Tongan ancient village. It’s possible to take a day trip to nearby islands, visit the upscale eco-resort Fafa or the lower-key Makaha‘a Island, both acn be reached by local ferry or even by kayak if you’re feeling adventurous.

Day 17 Cruising - Crossing the International Dateline

Get ready to tick time travel off your bucket list as you cross the international date line! The international date line defines the boundary between two calendar dates so when you travel east, the clocks will be wound back 24 hours and you'll effectively experience the same day twice as you cruise towards French Polynesia.

Please note: This day of the itinerary lasts for 48 hours or two nights on board.

Day 18 Cruising

Day 19 Papeete (Tahiti), French Polynesia

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

When Captain James Cook first sailed to Tahiti in 1769, he and his crew all thought they’d found paradise. Cook hinted at it in his journals, in coy language that would have been acceptable in his day; his men felt considerably less reserve, and returned home sporting tattoos and stories of a people who ate what fell from trees, and lived lives of freedom unknown in Europe. All without much need for clothes.

Although all of French Polynesia is sometimes referred to as Tahiti, Tahiti proper is only one island, ringed by a reef that turns the water shades of blue even sapphires can’t come near. Rivers flow down from its high peaks, and every night, the sun goes down behind the neighbouring island of Moorea, outlining the mountains like a laser show.

Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, is a bustling business and government centre, with black-pearl shops on almost every corner. As you move into the countryside, time starts to slip, and it's just the changeless ocean and the almost unchanged forests—and much the same sensation that made Cook think he'd found heaven on earth.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 20 Moorea, French Polynesia

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 22:00
(Tender)

Shaped like a heart and crowned with emerald-green spires, Moorea is easy to love. The Magical Island, as it's nicknamed, is celebrated for its untamed landscape and symmetrical side-by-side bays (called Opunohu and Cook's); it was said to be the inspiration for the mythical isle of Bali Hai in James Michener’s Tales of the South Pacific. Its languid lagoon seems without end, wrapping this 132-square-kilometre isle in shades of liquid blue, from pale aqua to intense turquoise. Dolphins and stingrays glide through the waves alongside snorkelers and divers exploring the stunning undersea scene. Venture inland to the valleys and another aspect of island life becomes clear: agricultural abundance, with crops that include pineapples, bananas, taro, sugarcane, coffee and cotton. Moorea has shopping, too, mainly for lustrous Tahitian black pearls and brightly patterned pareus (wraparound skirts).

Wherever you head, you'll find the South Pacific you have dreamed of, moving to the leisurely pace of island time. It can be hard to believe Moorea is just 20 kilometres from Tahiti’s bustling capital, Papeete.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 21 Raiatea, French Polynesia

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 23:00

Most first-time visitors to French Polynesia end up on one of the three best-known Society Islands: Tahiti, Moorea and Bora-Bora. And repeat visitors often head to the Tuamotu Archipelago or the Marquesas Islands, to scuba dive, seek out traditional Polynesian culture or learn about the cultivation of Tahitian black pearls. One of the sleepier Society Islands, Raiatea, located adjacent to Tahaa and within viewing distance of Bora-Bora, offers all these things and more.

The quiet allure of Raiatea, French Polynesia’s second-largest island, is home to a flower so rare it grows nowhere else on Earth. Its landscape is dramatic and mountainous, its tallest peak tops ‎1,000 metres, fitting for a place whose name means "faraway heaven." Tahitians consider this their sacred island, and a journey here will take you to sites associated with legends and lore. But adventure seekers will also find plenty of outdoor activities, including hiking, kayaking, diving and exploring by horseback, while shoppers can browse a handful of shops and the daily market in the port of Uturoa.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 22 Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 21:00
(Tender)

When you arrive to Tahiti on your Bora Bora cruise you first see it from the ship as it navigates Teavanui Pass, you'll be astonished. Brilliant blue water in far too many shades to count and palm-dotted white-sand motus (islets) encircle a lush island topped by craggy Mount Otemanu. Close your eyes and open them again. Yes, you are on a beautiful French Polynesia cruise and it’s all real!

For years, Bora-Bora has also drawn a multitude of divers eager to scope out its array of reef fish, rays and sharks. It's hard to compete with the sheer drama of the water, or with shape-shifting Mount Otemanu, which looks completely different from every angle. In fact, Vaitape, the island's largest city with a population of about 5,000 people, doesn’t even try to compete. Not much changes in this sleepy port, where black-pearl shops, boutiques and galleries join a weathered church and several small cafés where you could sample the poisson cru (raw fish marinated in coconut milk and lime juice). But to be honest, the best spot to visit on Bora-Bora is anywhere out on the lagoon.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 23 Cruising

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 24 Fakarava. French Polynesia

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00
(Tender)

Arriving by sea, you'll experience the innumerable shades of blue that are the lagoon encircling Fakarava, one of the largest atolls in French Polynesia's Tuamotu Archipelago. Once you step ashore, you'll notice the beaches alternate between whitest white and palest pink sand, with a backdrop of coconut trees swaying gently in the tropical breeze. And while this pristine paradise counts only around 800 residents on an island 60 kilometres (37 miles) long and 21 kilometres (13 miles) wide, it is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. That designation means Fakarava, as well as its six neighbouring atolls, are entirely protected, both onshore and in the surrounding waters. No wonder then that Fakarava is famous for its incredible snorkelling and diving. A lagoon excursion, which also spirits you to the atoll's most beautiful beach, one accessible only by boat, is a great way to complete your Seven Seas fantasy.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 25 Cruising

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 26 Taiohae, French Polynesia

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00
(Tender)

The dramatic landscape of the Marquesas is like nowhere else in French Polynesia. Formed by volcanoes, islands like Nuku Hiva, home to the charming port town of Taiohae, don't have a barrier reef or lagoon to protect them. As such, the sea crashes directly up onto the shore, creating wild scenery that has inspired artists and writers from Paul Gauguin to Herman Melville.

At the base of craggy, soaring peaks, Taiohae may be the main "city" in this far-flung island group with a peaceful tropical village vibe. The Marquesans are known for their excellent handicrafts, and on Nuku Hiva you'll find skilled carvers working in wood, bone and volcanic stone to create true pieces of art.

Beyond Taiohae are opportunities to explore Nuku Hiva's wild interior, replete with sharp basalt pinnacles and lush, green river valleys by either horseback or on foot.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 27 Cruising

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 28 Cruising - Crossing the Equator

The equator is an essential component of our planet’s geography—even though it’s just an imaginary line drawn on a map. In addition to being the widest spot on the planet—a full 43 kilometres (27 miles) wider than at the poles, this is also the planetary dividing line for the Coriolis effect, which explains why cyclones rotate clockwise north of the equator and counterclockwise south of it. It’s also the place best suited for launching spacecraft because the gravitational pull gives rocket ships an extra boost out of the stratosphere.

For a bit of light-hearted fun, if you’re onboard a craft where any of the crew are crossing this imaginary line for the first time, you’ll likely witness a King Neptune (or Crossing the Line) ceremony. This ancient naval tradition puts newbies, or “Pollywogs,” through a series of pranks and tests to prove themselves worthy of being a son or daughter of Neptune, the Roman god of the sea.,

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.
