Day 11 Kona, Hawaii, USA

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 18:00
(Tender)

Both culturally and geographically, Hawaii's Big Island divides into exact halves. The east is jungly, dark and prone to lava flows. The other side, the Kona side, grows all the coffee, and everyone wakes up really, really early. You might even see someone break the speed limit there, which is inconceivable elsewhere in the islands.

Much of this drier region almost resembles a desert. But the shapes of the hills and the way rain snags on ridges means Kona holds hundreds of microclimates. That's how the coffee growers have flourished: Variations of only a few feet in altitude can result in very different brews. Some farms cover barely an acre; others sprawl enough to encompass two or three varietals. Either way, the beans are babied, from bush to cup, by hand.

Thankfully, plenty of places exist to play and burn off a little caffeine around Kona. History lies thick on the ground, from Kamehameha's heiau (temple) to the sacred buildings of Puuhonua O Honaunau ("The Place of Refuge") to the bay where Captain Cook breathed his last. Whales love the Kona side, spinner dolphins live up to their names, and giant mantas slowly barrel roll up from the depths. Half an island is world enough.

Day 15 Cruising - Crossing the Equator

The equator is an essential component of our planet’s geography, even though it’s just an imaginary line drawn on a map. In addition to being the widest spot on the planet, a full 43 kilometres (27 miles) wider than at the poles, this is also the planetary dividing line for the Coriolis effect, which explains why cyclones rotate clockwise north of the equator and counterclockwise south of it. It’s also the place best suited for launching spacecraft because the gravitational pull gives rocket ships an extra boost out of the stratosphere.

For a bit of light-hearted fun, if you’re onboard a craft where any of the crew are crossing this imaginary line for the first time, you’ll likely witness a King Neptune (or Crossing the Line) ceremony. This ancient naval tradition puts newbies, or “Pollywogs,” through a series of pranks and tests to prove themselves worthy of being a son or daughter of Neptune, the Roman god of the sea.

Day 18 Pago Pago, American Samoa

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

Pago Pago’s small size belies its historic stature and epic setting. The city lies along the shore of Pago Pago Harbour, which was carved from thousands of years of volcanic-crater erosion on Tutuila Island. The fjord-like harbour, one of the most stunning in the South Pacific, is bordered by steep and lush hills and dominated by Rainmaker Mountain. The protected harbour site was selected in 1872 by Commander R.W. Meade for a fuelling station for the U.S. Navy. Meade negotiated the real estate deal with a Samoan high chief and the resulting naval base at Pago Pago was in use from 1900 to 1951.

Pago Pago itself is tranquil as far as capital cities go, though there is commerce and activity in the areas of Fagatogo and Utulei. The hills near the seafront are dotted with houses, while a variety of shops line the street that runs in front of the dock itself. The best views of the harbour and downtown can be had from the summit of Mount Alava in the National Park of American Samoa.

Day 19 Cruising - Crossing the International Date Line

Travellers flying or cruising across the Pacific Ocean get to experience the only-one-place-in-the-world feeling of adding or losing a day within the span of a second. The International Date Line is the longitudinal boundary between where one day starts (to the west) and another day ends (to the east). It runs roughly along the 180th meridian of longitude in the middle of the ocean - with some exceptions in the southern Pacific, where sovereign islands opted for one side over the other for commercial reasons.

Please note: As you travel west, your clocks will be wound forward 24 hours and you’ll effectively jump forward a calendar day as you cruise towards Apia.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 20 Apia, Samoa

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

The remote Polynesian nation of Samoa, surrounded by dragonfly-bright seas, boasts a dramatic volcanic landscape with vibrant green jungles. The country has two major landmasses: Upolu, the most populous of the Samoan islands, and Savai'i, the third-largest Polynesian island. Samoa's capital, Apia, sits midway along Upolu's north coast. This sprawling metropolitan area features a waterfront promenade and Beach Road, an avenue curving along the harbour where the Royal Samoa Police Band marches and hoists the national flag at Government House on weekday mornings. Check out their sharp ensembles, which feature navy lavalava (kilts) and robin's-egg-blue dress shirts.

Adventurers will want to make a splash at Palolo Deep National Marine Reserve near Apia harbour, while bookworms make a beeline to the home and grave of Robert Louis Stevenson. But perhaps the best way to experience fa'a Samoa (the Samoan Way) is by visiting the small villages scattered throughout the two islands. Here, you'll see locals still living in traditional fales, round thatched homes with no walls, all the better to enjoy the ocean breeze, and cooking on umus, "ovens" of hot stones placed in shallow holes in the ground.

Day 22 Savusavu, Fiji

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00
(Tender)

Known as the hidden paradise of Fiji, the striking harbour town of Savusavu is located on the south coast of Vanua Levu Island. Backed by green hills and featuring a bustling marina and attractive waterfront, the town was originally established as a trading centre for products like sandalwood, bêche-de-mer and copra. Today the town is known for its burgeoning eco-tourism infrastructure, which has spawned several luxury resorts.

The surrounding waters mean an abundance of scuba diving and yachting. On land, there are historic hot springs, waterfall hikes, bird-spotting in the Waisali Rainforest Reserve and visits to traditional villages. There are several key landmarks too, including the 19th-century Copra Shed Marina, which now serves as the local yacht club, and the Savarekareka Mission, a chapel built around 1870 by the first Roman Catholic mission on Vanua Levu. Relax and enjoy the palm-lined pristine beaches and the town’s assortment of restaurants, cafés and bars.

Day 23 Suva, Fiji

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 18:00

In the time before time, the people who would become the Fijians were shaped of wet earth, pulled from the sea on a giant fishhook and given more than 300 islands to live on. Or if you want to be a little more prosaic, the people of Fiji were part of the great Lapita migration, which began somewhere around Taiwan and headed east. The first boats to arrive stopped migrating when they found this maze of islands formed by the earth turning itself inside out with volcanoes.

Fiji, especially the southeast coast of Viti Levu, is geographically beautiful with a string of golden sand islands decorating the warm oceans. It is the kind of spot that made mariners of old leave their ships and settle on land. The city of Suva, holds three-quarters of the nation’s population. It’s also shielded by shimmering green mountains opening to a calm sea, a land lush with afternoon rains.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 24 Lautoka, Fiji

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 18:00

Lautoka, known as Sugar City, is nestled between the sparkling Pacific Ocean to the west and lush sugar cane fields and rolling pine forests to the east.

With a day at leisure in Lautoka, you could visit nearby Denarau, a popular holiday destination for visitors to Fiji known for it's resorts. On an optional shore excursion you could join a day trip to Tivua Island, a tropical island surrounded by 500 acres of coral reef where you will experience a traditional Fijian kava ceremony, go kayaking, snorkelling, or simply spend the day enjoying the tropical climate.

Day 26 Lifou, New Calefonia

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00
(Tender)

Easo is the capital of Lifou, the largest and most populated of the Loyalty Islands. Home to around 10,000 Kanak people, it’s a simple, relatively undeveloped and largely unspoiled place, famed for two things: a sandy palm-fringed beach that fans out on either side of the main dock, and a very friendly atmosphere. Cruise ships are often welcomed to this island paradise with traditional tribal dances as well as a colourful local market that pops up to sell food, drinks and crafts.

The island itself offers a diverse landscape that ranges from the steep cliffs of the northern coast to the pristine white-sand beaches and stunning turquoise waters along the southern coast. The island’s many walking paths and trails take in pretty churches, including the famous missionary chapel, the Chapelle Notre Dame de Lourdes, and pass scenic observation points, not to mention a wide variety of wildflowers and plants. Visitors can also tour vanilla plantations to learn about this venerable spice and its production, or make day trips to the nearby island of Tiga.

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 27 Noumea, New Caledonia

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

Nouméa is a French city with Polynesian accents, cooled by ocean breezes and set among tropical flowers the size of dinner plates. With one of the healthiest reef systems left on earth, the island’s lagoons, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, hold more than 9,000 species of fish and marine life. The Kanaks, the native people to whom French cooonialists first gave cooking lessons, already lived lives rich with fish, taro and coconuts fresh from the tree.

Day 37 Conflict Islands, Papua New Guinea

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

Although the name might not sound inviting, they were named after a British naval ship and the 21 islands are like paradise on earth. Tropical islets encircle an enormous turquoise lagoon formed by the rim of a sunken volcano, with vibrant coral reefs and rainbow schools of fish below the water. Located about 160 kilometres (97 miles) east of Papua New Guinea in the Coral Sea, the island group is owned by Australian businessman and conservationist Ian Gowrie-Smith, who is dedicated to protecting the ecosystem of the islands (he has an eco-resort on one island; the rest are uninhabited).

Just as Papua New Guinea is one of the wildest and most diverse places on the planet, the seas here offer some of the world’s most extensive biodiversity and coral reefs, making for unparalleled kayaking, diving and snorkelling. There are hundreds of coral species and thousands of species of fish and invertebrates such as the sea cucumber. Why not watch manta rays float past, lie back on the white sand, look up at the palm trees blowing in warm trade winds or watch the sun set over the lagoon, and dream of owning your own chain of tropical islands.

Day 50 Fremantle (Perth), Australia (Overnight)

Arrive: 08:00 - Overnight

Despite being one of the most isolated capital cities in the world, Perth keeps up with the times and trends, but it often paves its own way when it comes to food, fashion and art. Perth and its port, Fremantle, were first settled in 1829 by the Swan River colonists as free colonies, in contrast to the country's penal colonies. Historical relics abound, from the Fremantle Prison and the Round House to the Fremantle Market Hall, where shoppers once arrived by horse and carriage. These sights now share the spotlight with art galleries, breweries and designer boutiques. In the city centre, the modern towers of mining and financial firms also contain inventive restaurants such as Greenhouse and rooftop bars like the Mechanics Institute. Nearby are Perth institutions like the Art Gallery of Western Australia and Kings Park and Botanic Garden, as well as the creative neighbourhoods of Subiaco, Leederville and Mount Lawley. And with the Swan River at its heart and kilometres of Indian Ocean shoreline at its edge, Perth is an ideal city for a stroll, a bike ride or a sundowner on the water.

Your ship docks in Perth overnight so you can explore more of this Western Australian gem.

Day 53 Albany, Australia

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

Established in 1826, Albany was the first European settlement in Western Australia with its historic heart and modern waterfront. The area’s most striking features predate the original settlement. Its natural wonders include stunning coastline stretching from Torndirrup National Park’s majestic cliffs to the tranquil bay at King George Sound. In the interior, the peaks of the Stirling Range reach heights of more than 1,000 meters and offer opportunities for day hikes with breathtaking views.

During the 19th century, Albany played an important role as a centre of shipping between Britain and its Australian colonies, as it was long the only deepwater port on the continent. It was through Albany that some 40,000 Anzac troops departed for Europe.

The Whaling Station here has been converted to a fascinating museum on the history of the industry. It has the distinction of being the last operating station in both the Southern Hemisphere and the English-speaking world. Humpback, southern right and blue whales continue to be pursued here, though now by curious sightseers on whale-watching cruises during the annual whale season from June to October.

Today, “Amazing Albany” earns the adjective the city has bestowed upon itself, as it draws travellers eager to explore an unexpected and amazing corner of Australia.

Day 56 Adelaide, Australia

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 23:00

With a burgeoning creative class, top-notch wining and dining, and a pace of life that feels distinctly more leisurely than high-profile siblings Melbourne and Sydney, Adelaide has evolved into a must-visit destination. The biggest buzz is going on in the city's Central Business District, which has become the hub for artists, designers and restaurateurs, all breathing new life into a once-sleepy capital.

The town's reputation as a genteel, leafy haven is still justified, and Adelaideans' love of sport, particularly Australian Rules football and cricket, continues unabated. You'll also soon notice that the citizens of Adelaide are devoted to fine wine and great food, and they're particularly proud of the world-class vintages being produced in the famous Barossa Valley wine region, another must-see when visiting South Australia. Even if you can't make it to the source, the city's excellent restaurants and bars showcase local wines, many of which, like the country's most famous red, Grange Hermitage, are worth traveling across the world for.

Day 57 Penneshaw (Kangaroo Island), Australia

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 18:00
(Tender)

The Australian continent’s third-largest island, Kangaroo Island, enchants visitors with its mellow rhythms, which seem to be coming from a quieter and much simpler time. Even Penneshaw, its main ferry port, has a population of less than 300 people, and farmers sometimes still advertise for spouses on bulletin boards.

Long roads run arrow-straight through the fields, scrub and dense gum forests of this spectacular unspoiled destination. It remains one of the best places to see Australian marsupials in the wild. Almost half the island remains bushland or national park, sheltering koalas, echidnas and a million or so Tammar wallabies. Weighing just five to seven kilograms , these mini-roos flourish here, thanks to a dearth of foxes and other mainland predators. (Despite this strong population, the species, Macropus eugenii, remains on the endangered list.) Marine mammals also make a healthy showing on Kangaroo Island. Visitors can walk through one of the country's largest sea lion colonies and watch for rare southern right whales offshore.

Day 59 Melbourne, Australia

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

Melbourne is consistently voted one of the world's most livable cities and for good reason. This is Australia’s cosmopolitan heart with cutting-edge art and architecture, historic galleries, attractions and museums, plus a dizzying range of restaurants, bistros, markets and bars. It's renowned for its sporting culture, home to the esteemed Melbourne Cricket Ground and Australian rules football teams.

The famous laneways of Melbourne bustle with hidden bars and eateries, while myriad beaches and parks allow for the ultimate outdoor lifestyle and active things to do. It’s a melting pot of cultures and a city of gourmands who demand excellent food and find it everywhere, from modern Australian cuisine and delicious Asian fusion fare to low-key cafés serving the best coffee you’ve ever tasted.

If you want to leave the city, Melbourne is the gateway to Victoria's world-class wineries and spectacular coastline sights. Visit the famous penguins at nearby Phillip Island or feast on local produce in the picture-perfect Yarra Valley. Wherever you go in and around Melbourne, you’ll be sure to understand why so many choose to call this beautiful corner of the world home.

Day 61 Hobart, Australia (Overnight)

Arrive: 08:00 - Overnight

Tasmania is home to stunning landscapes, old-growth forests and exceptional local produce. Lording over all this goodness is Hobart, the island’s creative capital. It’s got one of the world’s best museums of contemporary art, vibrant markets, a cosmopolitan dining scene and eclectic music festivals. It’s also achingly beautiful, with a natural harbour setting and rugged Mount Wellington looming in the background.

The city is compact enough to easily explore on foot. Start at the sandstone area of Salamanca Place with its hip galleries, artist studios and bustling cafés and bars, and then roam the quaint streets of Battery Point, one of Hobart’s oldest neighbourhoods. Immerse yourself in nature at the gorgeous Botanical Gardens or head out of town to learn more about Tasmania’s dark but fascinating past. Fuel up on the freshest seafood straight from the Southern Ocean down at the waterfront, or feast on gourmet Tassie produce at one of the many excellent restaurants in town.

Your ship docks in Hobart overnight before departing early tomorrow morning to visit Port Arthur.

Day 62 Hobart, Australia - Port Arthur, Australia

Hobart: Overnight - Depart: 05:00

Port Arthur: Arrive 09:00 - Depart: 18:00
(Tender)

Port Arthur offers a fascinating introduction into the history and culture of Tasmania, indeed, of Australia as a whole. About a 100-kilometre drive southeast of Hobart, Tasmania's capital, Port Arthur is best known for its past as a penal colony. The Port Arthur convict settlement, which spreads over 40 hectares (100 acres), operated from the 1830s until 1877. Today its stone buildings make up one of several UNESCO-designated Australian Convict Sites on Tasmania. The whalers, miners, farmers and bushrangers who once lived in this region have given way to artists, foodies and rock climbers. The dramatic landscape ties it all together, infusing the identity of the people as well as the incredible food, drink and culture scene, for which Tasmania has become renowned. From the towering sea cliffs around Port Arthur to Hobart's historic Salamanca Place, southeast Tasmania holds much appeal for adventurous travellers. Add in artisan wineries and distilleries, and possibly one of the world's strangest museums, and you have a destination that’s easy to fall in love with.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts. Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

United States
If travelling on an Australian Passport, an ESTA (Visa Waiver) for the USA is a strict requirement when travelling to or flying through the USA. Once a USA ESTA Visa Waiver is issued it is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires (whichever is sooner) and will allow multiple entries into the USA. For information on ESTA eligibility or to apply, please visit https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/.
Please note: Due to recent changes in the USA Immigration policies, TripADeal recommends all travellers visit US Customs & Border Protection.

Canada
If transiting via Canada on the way to the USA, Australian and New Zealand passport holders must apply for an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) before travelling to Canada by air. An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. An eTA is electronically linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new eTA. If you are not travelling via Canada by air, and are only visiting by boat, you will not require an eTA if you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
