Day 9 Dardanelles Strait (Transit), Türkiye

The Dardanelles Strait is a natural body of water connecting the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara in western Turkey. Gaze out from the decks of your Cunard Queen at shores that have made history serving civilizations throughout the years. Dividing the continents of Europe and Asia, the 59-kilometre-long Dardanelles Strait is home to important landmarks that can be admired on this scenic period of your voyage. On the western side of the strait is the Gallipoli peninsular, a site that played a pivotal but tragic role in World War I. Look over the peninsular and perhaps take a moment to reflect on the historical scenes that occurred out on the battlefield here.

The geographical location of this body of water means that throughout the years, it has played a prominent part in politics, and the architectural remnants of its significance remain. At the narrowest point of the strait, admire Kilitbahir Castle on the west coast and Cimenlik Castle on the east coast in Çanakkale. Both erected in the 15th century at the behest of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, the fortresses were built in an effort to control this section of the water. Views of the 18th-century Bigali Castle and 19th-century Nara Castle also provide a glimpse into Turkish history.

Day 13 Piraeus (for Athens), Greece

The main port for Athens for thousands of years, today Piraeus is still a bustling coastal city with plenty of charm.

Pretty streets teeming with colourful shops. Bouzouki music seeping out of taverna windows. A wander around Piraeus will no doubt offer up a whole host of curiosities that beg a second look. The city has long been an integral part of Greece, serving Athens since the 5th century BC. Remnants of its significance in the Ancient Greek empire remain, and yet the buzz of modernity in the air is unmistakable.

Overnight: Cunard's Queen Victoria

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 14 Mykonos, Greece

A true vision of Greek island beauty, Aristotle’s favourite Mykonos is a sight to behold. With cobalt-blue Aegean waters lapping onto its coastal stretches and stunning beaches of untold golden sand, Mykonos introduces you to magical island living.

While Mykonos may be best known for its summer party atmosphere, it also offers luxury, history, world-class cuisine, sparkling shores, and plenty of unique tours that you can discover during your stay (charges may apply).

Mykonos is one of the most popular destinations for Mediterranean cruises, and it is not hard to see why. Whitewashed and aqua houses built on the water's edge and sailing boats peppered along the shore at the new port of Tourlos will be your first view of Mykonos when you arrive on the island.

From the new port, you could walk to Mykonos village, known locally as the Hora or Chora, or take the shuttle for a small fee. Once you have reached the centre, you can explore Mykonos's ancient grounds, culture, and cosmopolitan lifestyle.

Overnight: Cunard's Queen Victoria

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 15 Katakolon, (for Olympia), Greece

Katakolon is an attractive port set against a backdrop of rolling mountains, giving way to the Ionian Sea and separating the ocean from the Gulf of Kyparissia. This is a stunning step into the past.

From Katakolon, you might like to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the ancient wonder, Olympia, with extensive and well-preserved ruins that include a stadium and temples dedicated to the gods Hera and Zeus (optional shore excursion). Step back in time to almost 3,000 years ago, where ancient glory awaits at Olympia: the birthplace of the Olympic games. The marble starting blocks where 20,000 spectators once stood to watch the Olympians are still visible. The eternal flame of Attis casts its unwavering gaze over the site and today sends off the torch on its journey. Katakolon has been a port for a long time, and it was initially built to allow the transportation of goods to other major European ports.

A rail link was completed between Katakolon and Pyrgos in 1881, and remnants of the old town can still be seen in the old warehouse buildings along the back streets. Olympia is an unmissable sight to witness on your Greek cruise. Atmospheric, eerie and fascinating, you can easily spend a day wandering these ancient ruins and soaking up every relic of the past that still remains. Olympia was where the Ancient Greeks celebrated the Olympic Games, once every four years for a least 1,000 years! Situated in Elis valley, Olympia was also a national shrine to the gods and contained a number of temples, monuments, theatres and statues.

Overnight: Cunard's Queen Victoria

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 16 Messina Strait (Transit), Italy

Greek legends, migrating wildlife, and the occasional mirage make a journey through the Strait of Messina a uniquely fascinating voyage.

Connecting the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Ionian Sea, between the Eastern tip of Sicily and Western Calabria, the narrow waterway of Italy’s Strait of Messina provides passage to more than 300 migrating birds and is a hotbed of biodiversity.
Swordfish migrate here annually between May and July and can regularly be sighted along the water’s surface, while storks, flamingos, Egyptian vultures, and record numbers of birds of prey are among the Strait of Messina’s regular feathered visitors.

Just 3 kilometres at its narrowest point and with a naturally occurring whirlpool at its northern tip, the Strait has been linked to the Greek legend of Scylla and Charybdis, two opposing sea monsters believed to have inhabited the waters in ancient times.

Fata Morgana, or mirage, have also been known to appear on the horizon here. Historically thought to be conjured up by sorceresses to lure unsuspecting sailors, these mirages take shape when the atmosphere is just so and have been witnessed when looking towards Sicily from Calabria.

Combined with spectacular coastal scenery, including the mountain ranges of Monte Dinnammare and Peloritani, a sail along the Strait of Messina holds the promise of many magical encounters.
Please note: Your ship will not dock on this day of the itinerary.

Day 35 Wrangell, AK, USA

Nestled between Ketchikan and Juneau, Wrangell is one of the oldest towns in Alaska. Explore its rich and varied history. There are many facts and features that make Wrangell unique. Not least because over the years, this town has been ruled by four different nations – the indigenous Tlingit people, Russia, England, and the U.S. Evidence of Tlingit culture can be seen all over Wrangell, from the traditional, tribal Shakes Community House to the many totem poles scattered throughout the town.

During your time here, learn more about this ancient way of life and perhaps spend time exploring the surrounding mountainous landscape, local beaches, glaciers, rivers, and wildlife.

Overnight: Cunard's Queen Elizabeth

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 36 Sitka, AK, USA

Sitka is a hidden beauty on the east coast of Baranof Island in southeast Alaska. Towered over by snowy mountains in the distance, it has previously been known as the Indian River Park and Totem Park.
A city that appears to have sprung up in the most unlikely of locations, Sitka is one of Alaska’s most picturesque port calls.

Its location celebrates everything that makes this otherworldly US state unique: snow-encrusted mountains, densely forested wilderness and intensely sapphire waters that radiate with glass-like shine. Yet the city is more than a basecamp for outdoor adventurers.

Sitka enjoys a blended history as diverse as its scenery. Russian, Tlingit and American settlers have all imprinted on the city. Art and culture thrive as richly as Pacific salmon here, and while small compared to other Alaskan communities, Sitka boasts countless treasures for visitors to admire.

Overnight: Cunard's Queen Elizabeth

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 37 Juneau, AK, USA

Beneath an ice field that never melts, on a waterway that never freezes, Juneau is the unusual and disarmingly beautiful capital of Alaska. The Mendenhall Glacier is the not-to-be-missed attraction located approximately 20 kilometres from Juneau (charges may apply).

Despite its status as Alaska’s capital, Juneau’s urban area spans just 36 square kilometres, but its appeal far exceeds its city limits. Frequently cited as Alaska’s most scenic city, Juneau is nature’s playground, and what a playground it is! Waters abound with Humpbacks and orcas, forested trails lead to snow-ensconced mountains, and the ever-present majestic eagles circle overhead.

The town that kick-started Alaska’s gold rush is rich with treasures of all varieties, from native Tlingit history and excellent seafood to an abundance of outdoor pursuits. It’s little wonder that most of Juneau’s residents arrived for a short stay and decided never to leave.

Overnight: Cunard's Queen Elizabeth

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 38 Endicott Arm (Scenic Cruising), AK, USA

This pristine fjord is located in Alaska’s southeastern strip, a region sometimes referred to as The Panhandle and certainly known for its photogenic landscape.

Sparkling still waters. Majestic mountains. Soaring eagles. All these and more are sights that await at Endicott Arm. Enjoy scenes of extraordinary natural beauty as your Cunard Queen sails along this 48-kilometre stretch of glasslike water at the end of the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness.

As a cruise-by port, there is no port to call in and explore as such. Instead, treasure time spent simply soaking up the surroundings in this part of the world that’s truly like no other.

Please note: Your cruise will not dock on this day of the itinerary.

Overnight: Cunard's Queen Elizabeth

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 39 Ketchikan, AK, USA

Tiny Ketchikan is just under 5 kilometres long and three blocks wide, but here you can be sure to find Alaska’s busiest waterfront buzzing with boat planes, fishing boats, pleasure craft, and busy fishermen.

Once colonised by Tlingit and Haida tribes, Ketchikan is a thriving fishing town with colourful stilted houses, a rich Alaskan culture and a throng of trawlers hauling in fresh crab and salmon.

Arts thrive here, and museums celebrating the town’s history are abundant. Some of the best seafood you’ll sample in the Great Land will have been plucked directly from Ketchikan’s waters and served in its restaurants just hours later (not included). Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

Visas

Europe (Schengen Visa Countries)
A tourist visa is not required for Europe for stays up to 90 days if travelling on an Australian passport.

Türkiye
According to the Law on Foreigners and International Protection which entered into force on 11th April 2014, those foreigners who arrive at sea ports and intend to visit the seaport city or nearby provinces for touristic purposes are exempt from visa provided that their stay does not exceed seventy two (72) hours.

United Kingdom
From 8 January 2025, Australians who don't currently need a visa for short stays or don't already have a UK immigration status will need an ETA to travel to or transit through the UK. An ETA permits multiple visits to the UK for stays of up to 6 months at a time over 2 years or until the holder's passport expires, whichever is sooner.

United States of America
Australian passport holders must obtain an “ESTA” visa waiver in order to enter or transit in the United States.
Please note: You may be required to obtain a visa if you do not meet the eligibility requirements of the ESTA program. Please see https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov for full eligibility requirements and applications.

Canada
If transiting via Canada on the way to the USA, Australian and New Zealand passport holders must apply for an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) before travelling to Canada by air. An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. An eTA is electronically linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new eTA. If you arrive in Canada by train, bus, or boat, you don’t need a visa or eTA, but you do need to bring the right travel documents.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.
