Day 5 Parati, Brazil

Tender by zodiac: 07:00 - 16:00

The tiny harbour town of Parati (Paraty) is a colonial-era charmer, overlooking a protected bay along Brazil’s Costa Verde, “the Green Coast.” Founded by the Portuguese in 1597, Parati flourished as a transportation hub during the 17th and 18th centuries after gold was discovered in the state of Minas Gerais. The port was all but forgotten after Brazil declared its independence in 1822; today, its time-warp Old Town — designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019 — is the largest concentration of colonial architecture in the country. Spend some time wandering its pedestrianised cobblestone streets, admiring the elegant churches and whitewashed buildings with colourful trim. Forte Defensor Perpétuo — in the 18th century to protect the town from pirates — features a small museum and mesmerising views. The historic Caminho do Ouro or Gold Trail is a 1,900-kilometre-long thoroughfare laid by slaves that connected Minas Gerais with neighbouring states; you might like to follow a stretch from Parati through lush Atlantic rainforest in Serra da Bocaina National Park, stopping at a series of waterfalls and freshwater pools.

Included Shore Excursion Options

Option 1 - Walking Tour of Historical Parati Experience

Parati is a colonial town with original 18th-century architecture and style. It is a National Monument of Brazil and is on UNESCO's World Heritage Site 'tentative' list because it represents one of the world's most important examples of colonial architecture. Explore with your guide on foot, strolling through the narrow cobblestone streets.

Among the finest landmarks are the Church of the Santa Rita de Cassia, which was built in 1722 and the House of Culture museum, housed in a beautiful colonial mansion.

You will see plenty of colonial homes, appealing boutiques and tasteful galleries featuring the work of local artists. Often the craftsmen and -women are in residence, and you can watch them creating their art.

After approximately two hours of walking, you'll return to the ship. Guests who wish to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so but must make their way back to the ship.

Please note: This is a two-hour walk that covers approximately two kilometres in distance. There will be some cobblestone surfaces and inclines to negotiate. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Wear lightweight clothing; bring a hat, sunglasses sunscreen and a bottle of water from the ship. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shore excursion is subject to availability.

Option 2 - Scenic Schooner Cruising Experience

Parati is surrounded by lush rainforest vegetation. It is an unforgettable place with its emerald water that is perfect for swimming. A terrific way to explore the region is by boat, allowing you to visit the beautiful beaches nearby.

Leaving the pier, you will travel by schooner to some of the local places that are perennial favourites. Your guide explains local lore and history. You will enjoy up to two stops during the day. At each stop, you can dive in to explore the warm, clear seawater.

Please note: Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, sunscreen, hat and bottled water. Lunch and beverages are not included. Tour routes may vary depending on weather and tide conditions. Shore excursion is subject to availability.

Day 12 The Falkland Islands Experience

There is nowhere else in the world like the Falkland Islands. This archipelago is a remote, wind-swept place of stunning landscapes, dazzling white sand beaches, magnificent wildlife, and a rather gregarious mix of people. Over 200 islands surround the two main islands of West and East Falkland. These isolated and treeless shores are home to an overwhelming abundance of birdlife: albatross, penguins, caracaras, geese, and many others. Perhaps it was the very remoteness of the islands; the allure of its barren landscapes, pure in their austerity and colourful in their details, and the immensely large open skies that attracted settlers to its shores long ago, the islands have an accumulated a wealth of maritime and military history. More than three hundred shipwrecks litter its shores, while the stark white crosses of both British and Argentine soldiers stand as a silent reminder of the war of 1982. Numerous claims for the islands have been put forward in the course of their history. Nowadays the Falkland Islands are a self-governing British Overseas Territory.

Day 14 Stanley / Falkland Islands / Islas Malvinas

Tender by zodiac: 07:00 - 17:00
Tender subject to weather conditions.

The lonely lighthouse at Cape Pembroke welcomes arrivals to Stanley. It alerts ships to the treacherous rocks, reefs and shoals for which the Falkland Islands have long been known. With a population of over 2,000 people, Stanley is the largest settlement on the islands. Its gardens, tea rooms, brightly coloured houses and hotels lend it a slightly Victorian feel, seemingly suspended in time. The Anglican Cathedral, the southernmost in the world, stands prominently on Stanley’s waterfront.

The Falklands’ unique abundance of wildlife is evident in Stanley. Dolphins visit its harbour, while steamer ducks, kelp gulls, and other birds abound on shore. Southern sea lions can be spotted basking in the sun. Southern giant petrels often fly through town, oblivious to the human presence. Founded in the 1840s, the town was named after Edward Smith-Stanley, Earl of Derby, who never visited the islands.

Included Shore Excursion Options

Option 1 - Bluff Cove Lagoon: Penguins & Tea Experience

Don't miss this exciting and exclusive tour - you will discover breeding king and gentoo penguins and abundant bird species of the Falklands during this award-winning scenic excursion to Bluff Cove Lagoon; a privately owned wildlife haven.

After tendering ashore, you will be met by the Bluff Cove Pier team and depart with your informative driver/guide in a mini-bus for the 30-minute journey through Stanley and across the rolling hills to Bluff Cove Lagoon. Upon arrival, you will be met by Kevin with the knowledgeable and friendly rangers. You can take a stroll around the penguin colony which features a scenic backdrop of a large lagoon and a white, sandy beach that is occasionally patrolled by sea lions from the nearby island. This beautiful pristine reserve is home to 1,000 breeding pairs of gentoo penguins which protect the growing colony of king penguins and their chicks.

Magellanic Penguins which burrow on the nearby island can be found on the beach. Bird species that frequent or nest in the area include Skuas, Upland geese, Ruddy-headed geese, Magellanic oyster-catchers, South American terns, Dolphin gulls, Flightless Falkland steamer ducks, Snowy sheathbills and Southern giant petrels, among others.

Hattie and her team will serve you complimentary tea, coffee and hot chocolate at the legendary Sea Cabbage Cafe on the beach together with her delicious home-baked treats including scones with diddle-dee jam and fresh cream. There are always gluten-free options. You will be warmed by the peat stove whilst enjoying splendid vistas of the waves crashing on the white sand beach with penguins and dolphins pouring in. The Buff Cove gift shop and museum, also by the beach, depicts life in the Falklands and tells the story of Bluff Cove. You can find out about the farm, the nearby 1863 'Sugar Wreck', the 1982 War with Argentina and the fabulous lagoon wildlife as well as discussing spinning, felting and weaving with the farm wool. The shop sells a fabulous selection of unique Bluff Cove souvenirs and gifts, including Bluff Cove Tweed designed by Hattie and made with Bluff Cove Wool. You can use your credit card. After an unforgettable visit board your mini-bus for the return journey to Stanley.

Notes: There are excellent restrooms at the lagoon. The 300-yard walk to the beach is mostly flat and there are courtesy vehicles ready to drive guests with limited mobility. Assistance is available for wheelchair guests. Comfortable walking shoes, layered clothing with a windbreaker, sunscreen, and a fully charged camera battery are recommended. You will have two hours to enjoy the penguins, take photographs, stroll along the beach, look around the museum, shop, and enjoy complimentary treats in the cafe.

Option 2 - Port Stanley Highlights

One of the world's smaller capital cities, Stanley boasts a long history whose diverse components have made this port town a rather interesting destination. Driving east along Ross Road, you will see the Cross of Sacrifice -- a memorial to the war with Argentina in 1982 -- and the 1982 Memorial Wood.

Your guide will explain why Britain and Argentina went to war in the 20th century to settle, once and for, a decades-long dispute about ownership of the remote Malvinas/Falkland Islands.

At Whalebone Cove, see the hull of the Lady Elizabeth -- a three-masted iron barque from the turn of the 20th century -- and drive by the local airport and Surf Bay to see the former minefields. View the Totem Pole en route to Government House, where construction began in 1845, but it was 1859 before the first Governor took up residence here. You'll have a chance to take some photos.

Learn about the history of Stanley and the Falkland Islands at the Falkland Islands Museum at Britannia House, where you will browse among whaling paraphernalia and other items relating to Stanley's fascinating past. You'll then head back to the town centre, passing the 1982 Liberation Memorial, built to commemorate the British Forces personnel who lost their lives during the 1982 Malvinas/Falklands War. Watch for St Mary's Catholic Church, Victory Green, Christ Church Cathedral and the Jubilee Villas along the way.

Please note: shore excursion experiences are subject to availability.

Day 24 Antarctic Experience

Antarctica — It lay undetected for most of recorded time, beyond the margins of the known world. Even after someone stumbled on it, its isolation and the necessary rigours of the journey kept all but the most intrepid away. Those who did return ran short of superlatives to describe its magnificence. You go to Antarctica in a style undreamed by those ardent early pioneers. But what awaits you there — the snowy, sentinel mountain ranges, teeming penguin colonies and stately parades of monumental icebergs; the sight of an albatross effortlessly gliding across an ink-blue sea and the unexpected rainbow of mist arising from a breaching whale — all of that is virtually unchanged from the time before its discovery.

That is the magic of Antarctica, its timeless majesty and pristine beauty. Those who have seen it claim it’s impossible to adequately describe, that you must go yourself. Guests will be accompanied by a veteran Expedition Team, who in many cases have made Antarctica the focus of their life’s work. They’ll tell you what they know, point out what they think you ought to see, and step ashore with you to share the profound experience of adventure and discovery that brings them back year after year.

Each cruise to Antarctica includes the following exclusive amenities and activities designed to enhance every moment:

  • Inclusive zodiac tours and landings*
  • Digital photography workshops
  • Complimentary Seabourn expedition-grade parka and day pack
  • Opportunities for frequent wildlife sightings from the ship and on-shore

Day 32 Ushuaia, Argentina - Disembark - Fly to Buenos Aires

Arrives: 07:00

Once deemed too harsh for European settlement, Ushuaia's rugged beauty was the realm of its native inhabitants - the Yahgan People. Today, it holds the distinctive title of being the southernmost city on Earth, often referred to as 'the end of the world.' Situated along the banks of the Beagle Channel, Ushuaia unveils itself like an artist's masterpiece. A mosaic of vibrant houses adds a splash of colour against the dramatic backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Dominating this breathtaking panorama is Monte Olivia, its jagged peaks soaring 1,380 metres above the landscape.

After breakfast disembarkation will take place and a Seabourn transfer has been arranged to transport you to Ushuaia Airport for your charter flight to Buenos Aires. Referred to as the 'Paris of South America', Buenos Aires is considered one of the most livable cities in South America. Although the bustling capital city has just under 3,000,000 inhabitants and a population density of 13,680 inhabitants per square kilometre, it was rated in 2018 as one of the top cities on the continent for its ‘quality of life’. Twinned with world cities such as Moscow and Miami, Buenos Aires displays through its architecture, a cultural past rooted in both the Old and New Worlds. A vibrancy for life can be seen everywhere. Crowded public markets, street performers dancing the tango, colourful graffiti-style street art, ultra-modern buildings, a dramatic skyline and a bustling port. Culturally, Buenos Aires has the busiest live theatre industry on Earth, outperforming New York, London and Paris. Every weekend, over 300 theatres are active with plays and productions.

Buenos Aires was founded in 1580 by Spanish explorer Juan de Garay and has changed hands many times during its history. Upon arrival in Buenos Aires, a transfer has been arranged to your hotel for your three-night city stopover. Upon check-in, the remainder of your day is at leisure.

Overnight: Hotel NH Collection Buenos Aires Centro Histórico or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 33 Buenos Aires

Enjoy your free day in vibrant Buenos Aires before an exciting evening ahead with an organised dinner and tango show!

Shopping in Buenos Aires is a delightful adventure, offering everything from high-end boutiques to vibrant markets. Explore the elegant shops along Avenida Alvear for luxury brands, or wander through the bustling San Telmo Fair for unique antiques and crafts. Palermo Soho’s trendy boutiques feature cutting-edge fashion and design, while the famous El Ateneo Grand Splendid bookstore, housed in a historic theatre, provides a unique shopping experience. For local flavours and artisanal goods, visit the Mercado de San Nicolás or the Feria de Mataderos. Whether you’re hunting for high fashion or eclectic finds, Buenos Aires has something to suit every shopper’s taste.

This evening attend a traditional tango and folklore show with dinner (and selected wines, beers, soft drinks and coffee). This includes a transfer with pick-up zones in downtown Buenos Aires. Pick-ups are between 19:30 and 20:30. Then Dinner is at 20:30 and show time is at 22:00.

Packing List Guide
You don't need a lot of gear, just the right gear and this is your “must-have” list for Antarctica.
• Base Layer - Long underwear that's breathable, mid-weight thermal tops and bottoms that provide warmth without bulk. We suggest travelling with two sets.
• Insulating Layer - Expedition tops and bottoms that's worn over your base layer and under your waterproof pants and jacket. You may wish to choose expedition weight thermals or select comfortable, insulating shirts and pants made of “state of the art” performance fabrics that move and flex with you. Warmth and insulation are key for this layer.
• Lofted, insulating “puffy” vest - While your complimentary PolarShield Parka Set includes a jacket insulated with Primaloft, you’ll appreciate the versatility a similarly lofted vest adds to your adventure wardrobe. Such a vest is a wonderfully flexible piece to wear onboard, on deck or as an added layer during times of “exceptional” weather. The loft retains heat with remarkable efficiency, is feather-light and compacts for easy packing.
• Outer Layer - Waterproof pants as you’ll be “ship bound” without them. Waterproof is essential (but not breathable in this instance as you don’t want moisture seeping through the fabric’s pores while seated in the Zodiac or sitting in a snowpack onshore). Loose fitting and wide leg width are preferred (without zippers so you can easily tuck them into your knee-high waterproof boots).
• Footwear - Knee-high, insulated, waterproof boots are provided for your use with compliments while you are onboard your expedition vessel (you are fitted and size selections are made once you’re onboard). For those with special footwear needs, you may wish to rent overshoe boots which are made to be worn over your own custom, orthopaedic footwear.
• Socks - Heavyweight “over the calf” boot socks made of wool or wool blend.
• Gloves - Insulating waterproof gloves or mittens with removable liners. The liners can be worn as “stand alone” gloves/mittens during warmer moments or when reducing bulk to hold your camera, binoculars or smartphone. You'll also need neoprene paddling gloves if you opt to have a kayak experience.
• Headwear - You may wish for an additional, versatile piece of headwear or neckwear such as a balaclava or neck gaiter. It’s great to have on hand during a windy, wet or snowy weather event.
• Trekking poles - A lightweight, collapsible/telescopic walking staff (also called a trekking pole) provides a sense of security, increased balance and confidence when walking on ice, snow and rugged terrain.
• Waterproof sacks and cases - Heavy-duty waterproof sacks and cases specifically designed to protect your smartphone, camera, film, binoculars and carry in your backpack.
• Foot/Hand warmers - To put between your feet and your socks and your hands and gloves for extra warmth.
• Binoculars - Compact, high-performance binoculars ensure you don’t miss a thing. A pair of 8" x 26” (8 power magnification and 26mm objective diameter) is recommended for ease of viewing, travelling and packing.
• Other - It's also recommended to pack a pair of good sunglasses, glacier glasses or goggles with U.V. filter protection, sunscreen, lip balm and sunscreen.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

Chile
Australian citizens must obtain a visa before travelling. If your travel includes a transit in Chile, contact your nearest Embassy or Consulate of Chile to confirm if you need a visa for Chile.
Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
