Day 1 Arrive Darwin

Today, make your own way to The Smith Hotel, Darwin for check-in, then enjoy the day at leisure in the Top End.

Hotel check-in is available from 14:00. If you arrive earlier, you will be able to store your luggage with the reception team free of charge, until your room is available.

The vibrant capital of Australia’s Northern Territory offers a unique blend of tropical charm and cultural diversity. Known for its stunning sunsets, lively waterfront, and rich Aboriginal heritage, it’s a gateway to many of Australia’s iconic natural wonders.

This evening, head to the Mindil Beach Markets, and choose food from one of the many international food stalls before finding a spot on the beach to watch a glorious tropical sunset or utilise your Wharf One dinner and drinks voucher for a meal in the Waterfront Precinct (pre-booking required).

Please note: This is a self-guided tour, meaning you will not have a tour leader or guide with you for the entire trip. However, on days when tours are scheduled, an experienced guide will accompany you. Additionally, the tours included in this package are shared and may include non-TripADeal customers. Day 2 Top End Safari Glamping Experience

After a leisurely morning in the tropical city of Darwin, you will be embarking on an unforgettable overnight adventure at Matt Wright’s Wild Territory Top End Safari Camp.

After breakfast this morning, check out from the hotel by 10:00. If you are storing any luggage while away on your overnight trip, please leave it with the reception team on check-out, free of charge. Then, make your own way to the Wild Territory office with the luggage you are taking with you, to check-in for your overnight Top End Safari Camp (an approximately 5 minute walk).

Nestled in a private location off the Finniss River system, this glamping experience combines the best of the Top End's unique activities with the luxury of outback camping. Get up close to rescued crocodiles during a special interaction and feeding session. Then you'll soar high above the Top End to take in the stunning beauty with a scenic helicopter flight. Day 3 Darwin - Day at Leisure

After breakfast, it's time to depart, arriving in Darwin at around 10:00 where the team will drop you off at the Wild Territory office. From there, take a short walk to stay at The Smith Hotel for the next two nights. Check-in is available from 14:00, and luggage can be left with the reception team while you head out to explore Darwin.

Optional Activity: Darwin Harbour Gaze & Graze Sunset Cruise
This evening, join the Darwin Harbour Gaze and Graze Sunset Cruise to enjoy stunning views of the Top End city as you relax on board the Charles Darwin and witness Darwin’s famous sunsets.

During the two-and-a-half-hour cruise, indulge in a gourmet grazing platter followed by dessert while taking in the breathtaking sunset from the sun deck. Boarding begins at 17:30 for a prompt 18:00 departure, with the cruise returning to the dock at 20:30. Depart from Dock 3 at the end of Stokes Hill Wharf, City Side. Day 4 Darwin - Day at Leisure

Today is yours to continue exploring Darwin, to soak in the vibrant atmosphere and sights of this tropical city. Darwin offers a wide range of exciting and diverse activities to make the most of your time in this tropical city.

Here are some suggestions for your day of exploration:

  • Cage of Death at Crocosaurus Cove: Get up close and personal with a saltwater crocodile in the thrilling Cage of Death experience.
  • Darwin Waterfront: Enjoy a relaxing lunch at one of the many restaurants and cafes, then cool off with a refreshing dip in the wave pool.
  • Royal Flying Doctors Service Tourist Facility: Discover the history and impact of the Royal Flying Doctors Service and see history come to life.

Day 5 Discover Kakadu and Katherine

Embark today on an adventure into the heart of the Top End.

Pick up time is 08:05 this morning. Please ensure you are at the front of the hotel 10 minutes prior.

The first stop is WakWak, a wetlands region about an hour outside of Darwin. Immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery where you’ll have an excellent opportunity to spot an array of birdlife and possibly encounter crocodiles in their natural habitat. The journey continues into the iconic Kakadu National Park, located 300 kilometres east of Darwin. After checking into the hotel, visit the park’s visitor centre, taking in the landscape and wildlife before heading to the East Alligator region for a memorable cultural experience.

In the East Alligator region, join the Guluyambi Cultural Cruise along the East Alligator River, marking the border between Kakadu and Arnhem Land. This guided tour provides insights into the area’s creation stories, an opportunity to observe stunning birdlife and the chance to see crocodiles in their natural environment.

The day also includes a visit to Ubirr Rock, home to one of the world’s most remarkable collections of Aboriginal rock art. After exploring, climb to a lookout for a sunset view that is sure to leave you in awe.

Day 6 Kakadu National Park

Start the day with breakfast before setting out on an exciting adventure.

Spend the day exploring the Marrawuddi art galleries and cultural centres, to discover the rich stories of both historical and contemporary clan groups from the north and south of Kakadu and Arnhem Land. A guided walk takes you through the Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) art site areas, with visits to notable spots such as Kunwarddewardde Lookout, Anbangbang Billabong, Nawurlandja and possibly the Naguluwurr art site.

This journey offers stunning views of escarpments, sweeping stone country, savannah woodlands, lowlands and expansive floodplains and wetlands. You'll have the chance to appreciate the diverse creation stories and artworks in the galleries, learn about local groups and traditions, gaining insights into the surrounding flora and fauna.

In the afternoon, enjoy free time to swim, explore the area, or choose an optional activity such as a scenic flight over Kakadu (pay & book while on tour).

As the day winds down, take in one of the region’s breathtaking sunsets before enjoying a two-course dinner at the Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel (drinks not included).

Day 7 Kakadu to Katherine

After a leisurely morning, prepare to hit the road, travelling southwest towards Katherine and Nitmiluk. The journey south winds through landscapes radiant with earth colours of the Northern Australian bush. Along the way, keep an eye out for wildlife, including Red Tailed Black Cockatoos, Agile Wallabies, wild horses and buffalo.

The route passes through the historical township of Pine Creek, where there will be a stop to stretch your legs and enjoy refreshments, including homemade ice cream, a favourite among Top End locals. During the stop, learn about the Overland Telegraph construction and the Pine Creek gold rush era of the 1870s.

After checking in to your Katherine accommodation, the adventure continues to Nitmiluk National Park and Katherine Gorge. Enjoy the 2-hour NitNit Dreaming Two Gorge Cruise, which provides a leisurely glimpse into the history and stories behind this stunning area. The cruise takes you through the middle of 70-metre sheer rock walls, with wildlife hidden around every corner. This area, rich in creation stories, offers breathtaking surroundings and a relaxed atmosphere on the water. After the cruise, return to Katherine for an evening at leisure.

Day 8 Katherine Hot Springs & Nitmiluk Cultural Centre

This morning begins with a visit to the Katherine Hot Springs, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip and float in the natural thermal pools.

Next, head to the Nitmiluk Cultural Centre for a unique 2-hour “Footsteps of our Ancestors” tour. This interactive experience immerses you in Jawoyn culture through activities like basket weaving, spear throwing and playing the didgeridoo. Afterward, visit the Top Didj Art Gallery, where you’ll have the opportunity to view art created by local artists.

Your journey continues south to the beautiful Edith Falls, where you can relax in a picture-perfect Top End setting. Enjoy a picnic lunch and take a swim in the large plunge pool beneath a cascading waterfall, a perfect way to cool off.

Day 9 Litchfield National Park & Jumping Croc Cruise

Today, embark on a tour of Litchfield National Park, to explore some of Australia’s most diverse landscapes, including sandstone pillars, panoramic floodplain views, picturesque waterfalls and vibrant wildlife.

Pick-up time is 07:25 this morning. Please arrive at the front of the hotel 10 minutes prior to departure.

Just over an hour's drive from Darwin, Litchfield National Park is surrounded by lush tropical rainforest, offering a cool escape from the Top End heat. Along the way, take in the majestic views of the Adelaide River floodplains and join the spectacular Jumping Crocodile Cruise to see these wild reptiles up close. A quick stop in Batchelor, the gateway to Litchfield National Park, allows for a chance to support local businesses and pick up a takeaway lunch, snacks, drinks or coffee.

Inside the park, visit the impressive Magnetic Termite Mounds, architectural wonders built by local termites, featuring arches, tunnels, chimneys and nursery chambers that will leave you in awe. Refresh with a dip in natural plunge pools like Buley Rockholes or Wangi Falls. The serene Florence Falls, surrounded by monsoon forest, cascades into a peaceful plunge pool, while the powerful Tolmer Falls showcase the raw beauty of nature as it carves its way through rocky escarpments.

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide: 
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group. 

Tour Leader: 
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined. 

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured. 

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
The dry season is considered to be from May to October and is the best time to travel to the Top End. Most roads are open and the weather is reliable, June to August has the coolest weather. Temperatures range anywhere from 23-34 degrees - it is recommended to wear sunscreen, take plenty of water and wear a hat for sun protection.

Fitness Level Required: A moderate level of fitness will be required.

Expect a moderate pace of touring with a focus on guided tours that may include full days with extended activity, guided city tours or nature walks. You will require a general level of fitness for unassisted navigation of stairs and inclines, longer distances with possible periods of standing when visiting sites, walking on sloping, uneven ground or elevations. You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance. Please note: Many areas may be inaccessible to wheelchairs or mobility scooters, where the unassisted use of personal walking sticks and other aids may be required. Although some assistance may be available, every traveller should be self-reliant during all aspects of their travel.

Voluntary Changes
This includes booking changes requested by you, including but not limited to those changes requiring an airline ticket or a Purchase Confirmation reissue.
• Changes - $100 AUD per booking and any additional charges applied by the airline/cruise company/accommodation/other travel providers.

Supplier Fees
In the event the tour package you have purchased is unable to proceed, and/or a travel Supplier is unable to fulfil the tour due to external circumstances (Limitation of Liability e.g. a Force Majeure event), there may be a fee or amount of money that is withheld by our Suppliers and is unrecoverable. This may be due to non-refundable airline tickets, cancellation penalties with cruise cabins or unrecoverable payments with our land/accommodation partners. If refunds are not available from Suppliers, we will endeavour to obtain a travel credit on the best terms available and communicate these outcomes to you. In the event we are unable to obtain a refund or travel service credit, or part thereof, this cost is passed on to the customer as a Supplier Fee.
