Overview

Discover both sides of North America with this 22-day back-to-back cruise package travelling to Alaska’s scenic Inside Passage and Canada’s impressive East Coast.

Start your first cruise in Vancouver, Canada, and spend seven nights on board Holland America’s Zaandam ship sailing through the Inside Passage: dock in quaint old-time towns made famous during the gold rush, like Skagway; see the Indigenous totems that adorn Ketchikan, the Salmon Capital of the World; or step in quaint Juneau, a town surrounded by forests, mountains and glaciers. Full days of scenic cruising will take you to spectacular places like Tracy Arm, Glacier Bay and more, so have binoculars and cameras ready; abundant wildlife in the area means you may spot bears, humpback whales, orcas and plenty of birdlife before returning to Vancouver.

The MS Zaandam, part of the Holland America Line fleet, was designed to offer a classic cruising experience with a modern twist: Entertainment options include The Mainstage, hosting Las Vegas-style revues and variety shows; the Wajang Theatre for films and lectures; and Billboard Onboard for live music. Dining options range from elegant meals at the Pinnacle Grill to casual fare at the Lido Market and many more.

Cross the continent from Vancouver to Quebec by air to board Holland America’s Zuiderdam ship for a 7-night Canada & New England cruise. Expect more spectacular sightseeing, with full days of scenic cruising through the Saint Lawrence River and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. There are 40 lighthouses to spot in the Quebec area alone. Spend some time appreciating Perce Rock, an 88-metre-high monolith in the Gulf of St Lawrence that has generated myths of ghost ships and attracted visitors for centuries. In Nova Scotia, visit cities such as Sydney, the home of the Big Fiddle, or Halifax and its nearby village of Peggy’s Cove, which is a must-see when in the area. This area is home to bald eagles, bears and moose, so keep the camera ready. After a day in Portland, Maine, USA, end your cruise in Boston, Massachusetts, before flying home.

The MS Zuiderdam by Holland America Line offers world-class entertainment at the World Stage, featuring BBC Earth in Concert and other performances. Explorations Central (EXC) enriches the journey with expert insights and opportunities to engage with local cultures. Culinary excellence awaits at the Main Dining Room, Lido Market buffet, and specialty restaurants like the Pinnacle Grill, because a good day of cruising means a healthy appetite.

This fantastic package includes return international flights, a one-way domestic flight from Vancouver to Quebec, a 7-night Alaska Inside Passage cruise, a 7-night Canada & New England cruise (both with Holland America Line), five nights of 4-star hotel accommodation, 40 meals, including all meals while cruising, and much more.

You can add extra days to your itinerary with arrive early and stay behind options, or you can upgrade your stateroom to an Ocean View or Verandah while booking.

Day 4 Juneau, Alaska

Arrive: 13:30 - Depart: 22:00

As you cruise towards your next destination, Juneau, enjoy scenic sailing through the Tracy Arm Inlet. Steep cliffs and glacier-covered mountains flank this fjord, fringed by one of the largest intact coastal temperate rainforests in the United States. Old-growth trees colonized Tracy Arm's mouth long ago as the Ice Age retreated. But further up the sinuous 48-kilometre waterway, its icy grip lingers a little. There, the twin Sawyer Glaciers flow from the peaks down to the sea, sloughing off stories-high chunks of water frozen decades or even centuries before. Even more glorious than nearby Glacier Bay, Tracy Arm is part of the 5.7 million acres of pure wilderness sheltered by the Tongass National Forest (America's biggest). Visitors often see bears, whales and mountain goats roaming across various corners of this pristine area — not to mention chubby baby seals resting on the ice floes.

This afternoon you arrive in Juneau, Alaska, the most remote state capital in the United States. Surrounded by water, forest and mountain sights, visitors seeking things to do in Juneau indoors and outdoors can hike a glacier, eat fresh-caught fish on a seaside patio and tour a grand capitol building, all in one day. Additional charges may apply. The sleepy, misty city of around 32,000 —mostly fishermen and small-business owners— has a frontier town vibe but welcomes more than a million visitors each summer to its natural attractions, cementing Juneau as one of Alaska’s most favourite tourist destinations.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 5 Skagway, Alaska

Arrive: 06:30 - Depart: 21:00

At the height of the Klondike Gold Rush, the port town of Skagway served as the primary gateway to the legendary gold fields, and quickly grew into Alaska’s largest settlement. It was then a raucous frontier hub packed with trading posts, saloons and guesthouses. As the gold rush faded into the 1900s, so did Skagway, but today it has been reinvigorated as a gateway for a new kind of visitor: those looking to explore Alaska’s colorful history, pristine wildlife and unrivaled natural beauty. At every turn, you’ll find yourself immersed in gold rush lore, from the infamous Red Onion Saloon that still keeps a pistol that Wyatt Earp left behind en route to the Klondike, to the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, a classic narrow-gauge railway that traverses rugged mountains and passes cascading waterfalls and towering glaciers as it connects Skagway to Whitehorse deep in the Yukon. Known as the "Garden City of Alaska", Skagway is filled with beauty and nature. Much of the town has been preserved as part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, where rangers offer free walking tours around the historic district.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 6 Scenic Cruising - Glacier Bay

On your scenic cruise to Glacier Bay, close your eyes and take in the sounds: the creaks and groans of 'living' ice, the shrill cries of gulls and soaring eagles, or maybe even the splash of a breaching humpback whale. Frosted peaks towering over mossy forests, wide tidewater glaciers (there are seven in the park), and marine wildlife are givens on Glacier Bay cruises, but every experience in this changing biosphere is unique. Holland America's ships are perfectly sized for the optimal experience. There are glaciers, fjords, inlets, rivers, streams and wildlife galore on Glacier Bay cruises, so bring binoculars. Local experts come aboard for an experience that is both filled with natural wonder and enriching. As a proud Authorized Concessioner for Glacier Bay National Park, Holland America partners with rangers and local Huna Tlingit guides who provide expert insight into this diverse ecosystem and millennia-old culture. You will not only leave Glacier Bay with a shorter bucket list, you will have a deeper understanding and appreciation of this 3.3-million-acre UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 7 Ketchikan, Alaska

Arrive: 11:00 - Depart: 19:00

Today you cruise to Ketchikan, Alaska. Alaska's 'First City' of Ketchikan is so named because it’s the first major landfall for most cruisers as they enter the picturesque fjords of the Inside Passage, where the town clings to the banks of the Tongass Narrows, flanked by green forests nurtured by abundant rain. Ketchikan is one of the best spots along the Inside Passage to explore the rich cultural sights of Native Alaskan nations like the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian. You can see intricately carved totem poles at the Totem Heritage Center and Totem Bight State Park, while the attractions of Saxman Village just outside of Ketchikan offers the chance to see Tlingit culture in action, with working carvers and a dance show in the clan house. Additional charges may apply.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 8 Scenic Cruising - The Inside Passage

Enjoy the spectacular scenery featuring glacier-cut fjords, lush rainforests and diverse wildlife as you cruise back through Alaska's Inside Passage towards Vancouver, Canada.

Overnight: Holland America's Zaandam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 9 Disembark Inside Passage Cruise - Vancouver, Canada

Arrive: 07:00

Enjoy your final breakfast onboard as your ship docks in Vancouver. Once off the ship, make your own way to your centrally-located hotel and enjoy the rest of your day at leisure. Vancouver offers the perfect combination of urban meets nature. Enjoy picturesque views of the mountains while exploring the city’s local hot spots like Stanley Park, Granville Island, Gastown and more. Additional charges may apply. Overnight: Hotel PUR Quebec, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel or similar, Quebec City, Canada

Meals included: None

Day 11 Quebec City, Canada

Enjoy a day at leisure in Quebec City, Canada.

Few places in North America are as steeped in history as Quebec City, Canada. Older than Jamestown and founded before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, it is the only city north of Mexico whose original fortifications remain intact. The Quebec City historic district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is still home to religious orders and hospitals that date back to the 17th century. Its Place-Royale would look familiar to the explorer Samuel de Champlain, even with its modern attractions of gift shops and cafes. On the Plains of Abraham, you can walk the battlefield where, in 1759, the French forces under General Montcalm were decisively trounced by the British, led by General Wolfe. The British took control of all of New France within a year of that 1759 battle, but even so French culture still lives on here. More than 95 percent of the city's population speaks French as its first language, though it's easy to sightsee and navigate the city in English. You might like to tour the museums and historic sights of Quebec City that celebrate Quebecois history and dine at restaurants that serve its distinctive cuisine. And you'll discover a remarkable culture that has survived and thrived into the 21st century.

Overnight: Hotel PUR Quebec, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel or similar, Quebec City, Canada

Meals included: None

Day 12 Begin 7-Night Canada & New England Cruise - Quebec City, Canada

Depart: 23:00

Enjoy your day at leisure until it is time to make your own way to the cruise terminal to begin your 7-night cruise aboard Holland America's Zuiderdam. Once you're on the ship, get settled into your cabins and enjoy the evening at leisure as you set sail.

Overnight: Holland America's Zuiderdam

Meals included: Dinner

Day 13 Scenic Cruising - Saint Lawrence River

The nearly 1,200-kilometer stretch of the St Lawrence River is a lighthouse lover’s paradise, with more than 40 of them lining the Quebec portion alone. Unpredictable weather and sudden choppy waters account for the building of these historic monuments, such as the one built in 1830 at Pointe-des-Monts and the Phare de Matane, both of which are now small museums. Centuries-old fishing villages line the mighty waterway that alternates between imposing cliffs and plateaus and broad estuaries filled with fertile islets. Humans have fished the rich river and hunted its tributary lands for some 10,000 years. Much is still not known about the two dozen St Lawrence Iroquoian tribes that had vanished by the time Quebec City founder Samuel de Champlain arrived in the early 17th century. The river was a major entry point for exploring North America, and during the Seven Years' War the British navigated to Quebec City to defeat the French at the Plains of Abraham. Today, some 300 kilometres of the river are called the whale route, along which some 13 resident species thrive, including blue, beluga and right whales.

Overnight: Holland America's Zuiderdam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 14 Scenic Cruising - Gulf of Saint Lawrence

A lighthouse on little St Paul’s Island is a stark reminder of days gone by as you sail past this infamous old shipwreck site, known as the graveyard of the gulf, on your way through the Cabot Strait and into the Gulf of St Lawrence. So huge is the gulf that half of Canada’s 10 provinces have a coastal connection to it. Perhaps that’s not surprising, considering that it’s the world’s largest estuary and fed all the way from the Great Lakes 1,200 kilometers away. A mere 19,000 years ago, it was covered under a mile-thick sheet of ice. Every Canadian schoolkid knows that in 1534, Jacques Cartier was the first European known to enter the gulf waters and encounter Maritime Algonquian peoples. In short order, the French kept arriving, as did Portuguese and Basque, who established whaling operations and shipped unimaginable amounts of cod to the Old World. Today, visitors come to explore massive islands, colorful towns and national parks that straddle the surrounding mainland, as well as thousands of tiny islets around which whales now thrive.

Overnight: Holland America's Zuiderdam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 15 Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 17:00

Charlottetown is the capital of Prince Edward Island, Canada’s smallest province. It is also the area's largest city, though it has fewer than 35,000 residents. The city has an impressive number of Victorian houses and buildings and great parks waiting to be explored. For Canadians, it is perhaps most famous as the Birthplace of Confederation. It was here, mostly at Province House, that an 1864 conference led to the creation of the Dominion of Canada. Prince Edward Island is linked to New Brunswick on the mainland of Canada by the 13-kilometre Confederation Bridge that soars over the Northumberland Strait. A remarkable feat of engineering, the bridge opened in 1997 and is the longest in the world over icy waters. Sites within downtown Charlottetown include the lovely Victoria Row, which becomes a pedestrian mall each summer, and other historic buildings, some of which are now museums. Nearby Prince Edward Island National Park is home to white-sand beaches and hiking and biking trails—plus fans can see the house and farm that inspired the beloved book Anne of Green Gables. During your visit, you can also learn about the daily lives, past and present, of residents on lighthouse and boat tours. (Not included)

Overnight: Holland America's Zuiderdam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 16 Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 16:00

Sydney is the largest city on Cape Breton Island, which is linked by causeway to the rest of Nova Scotia. Sydney’s attractions start at the harbor, where visitors can shop for locally-made crafts and see the world’s largest fiddle, which towers beside the port’s cruise pavilion. Some of the city’s historic houses and churches date back to the 1700s and 1800s and are open for tours. Additional charges may apply. Restaurants often provide live music (expect fiddles and sea chanteys) along with meals of seafood fresh-caught in nearby waters. Sydney’s galleries give visitors a chance to meet local artists and purchase their work. Cape Breton's natural wonders include the spectacular scenic drive known as the Cabot Trail. Hikers in Cape Breton Highlands National Park will find stunning vistas around every turn, while a boat ride on massive Bras d’Or Lake, which is ringed by wild hills, offers a different perspective on the province. You might like to explore the region’s past with a visit to the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, and learn about the area’s First Nations communities at Membertou Heritage Park. If you decide to go deep underground at the Cape Breton Miners Museum, your tour guide is likely to be a man who toiled for years in the island's coal mines and has many stories to tell. Another must-see: the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, where the famous inventor made his summer home.

Overnight: Holland America's Zuiderdam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 17 Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 16:00

Located on a rocky inlet on the Atlantic Ocean, Halifax — Nova Scotia’s provincial capital — is defined by its maritime geography. It's a spirited mix of world-class history and nautical-themed museums alongside bunkers and fortresses that guarded the harbor, plus striking public art and sights, funky shops and excellent pubs serving up folk music (and good pints). Explore the Halifax waterfront where steamships once anchored to drop off arriving immigrants at Pier 21. Savor the low-key but classy culinary scene for fresh seafood and Nova Scotia specialties — the city has both street vendors and casual joints catering to university students and upscale eateries with elegant settings. Along Nova Scotia's southern shores, the city is surrounded by lush greenery and charming villages that are worth the trip from downtown proper. You might like to snap photos of attractions in the charming fishing village, Peggy's Cove, with its picturesque lighthouse on a rocky outcropping. Or you can choose to wander the streets of Lunenburg, whose colorful Old Town is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can also soak in the charms and sights of Mahone Bay, home to artists' studios and a trio of steepled churches.

Overnight: Holland America's Zuiderdam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 18 Portland, Maine, USA

Arrive: 12:30 - Depart: 22:00

Modern Portland, first settled in 1633, carries the marks of both subsets of Mainers. The restored brick buildings and warehouses of the Old Port and the fine upright houses of prosperous captains, merchants and shipbuilders make the city’s past a living part of its present. And the waterfront is a going concern, not a museum: Fishing boats chug into and out of their berths, buoys clang, harbor seals bark. Those shop windows aren’t displaying hardtack, rope or hand salve, though. Juice joints, art galleries, bookstores (and comic-book stores!), worshipful temples to coffee, locavore bistros with national press, bespoke menswear designers and gelato shops all jostle for attention. Don’t limit your visit to the Old Port, though. You might like to wander through the terrific art museum or take a tour of one of the city’s historic homes. Why not jump on a ferry or whale-watching boat and get out into the busy harbor. Additional charges may apply. Head to the coast —craggy, windswept, dramatic— a glorious and undeniably New England panorama. Get out and take it all in. Welcome to Vacationland.

Overnight: Holland America's Zuiderdam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 19 Disembark Canada & New England Cruise - Boston, USA

Arrive: 07:00

Enjoy your final breakfast onboard as your ship docks in Boston, Massachusetts. Once off the ship, make your own way to your centrally-located hotel and enjoy the rest of your day at leisure. New England’s largest city, Boston, Massachusetts, is home to historic sights and modern neighborhoods; stores and restaurants with old-time character; and gracious green spaces as well as a beautiful waterfront. Each of Boston’s neighborhoods has its own personality and things to do, whether you’re enjoying the food of the North End’s Little Italy, admiring the beautiful 19th-century architecture of Beacon Hill or watching the street performers in Cambridge’s Harvard Square. The waterfront offers harbor views, while boat tours allow you to take in the city skyline while sightseeing. In every neighborhood, shopping and dining reveal Boston’s true eclectic self, from casual to high-end, but always interesting. Finally, Boston is a city of green spaces where you can relax and enjoy the outdoors. The Emerald Necklace, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, is a 1,100-acre chain of linked parks, including the lovely Boston Common and Public Garden.

Visas

Canada
Australian and New Zealand passport holders must apply for an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) before travelling to Canada by air. An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. An eTA is electronically linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new eTA.

United States
If travelling on an Australian passport, an ESTA (Visa Waiver) for the USA is a strict requirement when travelling to or flying through the USA. Once a USA ESTA Visa Waiver is issued it is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires (whichever is sooner) and will allow multiple entries into the USA. For information on ESTA eligibility or to apply, please visit: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.
Please note:
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
