Day 12 Leixoes (Porto), Portugal

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

Porto, the second-largest city in Portugal, flourishes with a lively scene for the arts, food and music amidst Art Deco buildings and UNESCO World Heritage-designated historic core.

Take time to visit the port wine cellars where the city’s famous export is blended and stored. Then seek out a turn-of-the-century bookstore, the neoclassical Stock Exchange Palace or the sprawling arts complex.

Tumbling from the newer sections of the city down to the banks of the Douro, Porto’s oldest quarter, Ribeira, can feel contemporary one minute with starkly modern galleries and chic bistros and ancient the next with narrow alleyways strung with laundry lines and worn stone stairways connecting cobblestone streets. Wander the neighbourhood, from more commercial strips to residential back streets where old ladies chat and children bobble soccer balls. Down by the Douro at Ribeira Square, the streets open up, the sky is blue and cafés set their tables and chairs out on the plaza, eager to serve you. Porto knows how to relax and enjoy life.

Overnight: Holland America Line, Nieuw Statendam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 13 Lisbon, Portugal

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 17:00

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a wealth of sights, tastes and sounds. An ensemble of neighbourhoods both old and new, it’s a city full of history, culture and tradition. The spirit of Lisbon can be encapsulated by the soulful musical genre, fado, which can best be enjoyed in Alfama, the city's oldest neighbourhood. Enter one of the area's old-school taverns and listen to passionate renditions of Fado Vadio, sung by amateurs, often after a round of aguardiente, an anise-flavoured liqueur.

Lisbon is known as the City of Seven Hills, experience the tram cars like a local, the fun of a tuk tuk or take one of the four elevators to access hilly neighbourhoods: The Santa Justa vertical lift, an iron tower, can whisk you from downtown to Carmo for a visit to the historic Convento do Carmo or try the ultra steep streetcar-type Elevador da Glória to get up to the botanical garden in no time.

Overnight: Holland America Line, Nieuw Statendam

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.
