Day 5 Scenic Cruising The Dardanelles, Türkiye

Today, stay onboard as you cruise Türkiye's Dardanelles Strait.

On the far northwest coast of Türkiye, the 60-kilometre-long Dardanelles divides the continents of Europe and Asia and is the sole waterway between the Aegean and Marmara seas and beyond to the Black Sea. For this reason, the Dardanelles has, for millennia, been a strategic gateway for both the shipping trade and military campaigns to Istanbul and the Black Sea region.

The Dardanelles used to be called Hellespont, after Greek mythology’s mortal princess, Helle, who fell from the back of a flying golden ram in these treacherous waters. In another Greek myth, Leander swam across the strait, which was famously emulated in 1810 by the Romantic poet Lord Byron. In modern times, Australians, New Zealanders and history buffs will take the most interest in the Gallipoli Peninsula on the northern shore at the mouth of the Dardanelles. For it was here, in 1915, that the legend of the Anzac spirit of courage, loyalty and friendship was born.

Kusadasi in Turkey is the gateway to one of the most legendary cities of the ancient world, Ephesus. St. Paul preached in its Great Theatre, while the facade of the Celsus Library survives as a testament to the city’s role as a centre of learning and culture.

Not far from Ephesus, the Temple of Artemis (also known as the Temple of Diana), one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, once stood, drawing pilgrims from around the Mediterranean. While it no longer stands, it is possible to walk amongst its foundations and the remains of its towering columns.

Other historic sites can also be found nearby - The House of Mary is believed to be the home of Jesus’s mother at the end of her life, and the Basilica of St. John, constructed in the 6th century, marks the location of his tomb. (Like Mary, it is said he spent his final years in Ephesus.) Nearby, the Selcuk fortress reflects the period of Byzantine and Ottoman control of the region.

From ancient wonders to holy sites, there are few ports in the Mediterranean as magical as Kusadasi, and a day here is a day spent in the company of some of antiquity's greatest figures.

The port of Katakolon is the gateway to the Peloponnese, one of Greece’s most intriguing and least well-known areas. Beyond the region’s famous site of ancient Olympia, one of the most treasured remnants of the classical world, the Peloponnese gets little of the glory given the Greek islands and Athens.

A distinctly Greek welcome can be experienced here like nowhere else. The region reveals what it means to be Greek, with traditions that going back thousands of years, simple but delicious and healthy cuisine, towering mountains, crystal blue seas and, above all, the true hospitality of the people. The southern anchor of this coast is Sarandë, whose ancient inhabitants were said to be the descendants of the ancient Greek hero Achilles.

Like a mini San Francisco, the city is built around a series of stairs that lead from the top of the hill, dominated by a castle, down to the seafront. Its easy access to the sea helps explain the city’s reputation for serving excellent, fresh seafood. Sarandë is also a convenient base from which to visit a plethora of ancient ruins and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Please note: This port is accessed by tender boats. Boarding and disembarking tender boats may involve steps and uneven surfaces. Corfu is the pearl of the Ionian Sea, attracting royalty from across Europe in the 19th century and modern celebrities from all over the world ever since. The island reflects a triple heritage. As well as being undeniably Greek, the culture and food also show a clear nod towards nearby Italy, particularly Venice, whose fortresses dot the island. The British influence may be a little unexpected, however they ruled the island for many years, and left a legacy of cricket and ginger beer, among other things.

The bustling atmosphere of Corfu Town remains elegant, infused with culture and history. The Greek islands are well regarded as the most beautiful in the world, with white-sand beaches backed by verdant mountains hiding traditional old villages. Day 22 Taormina, Italy

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 16:00

Located on Sicily's east coast, just north of the active volcano Mt. Etna, Taormina has long drawn visitors with its stunning coastal scenery, thanks to its vantage point 204 meters (669 feet) above the Ionian Sea. Literary giants like Goethe and D.H. Lawrence spent time here, and more recently the town has become a popular spot for fans of the Godfather films, with some scenes shot in the area.

Founded in the 4th century B.C.E., the town has a compact historic centre that’s best explored on foot. Start with a visit to the ancient Greek Theatre before shopping and people-watching along the Corso Umberto. A cable car makes it easy to reach the beach at Lido Mazzaró, one of the most picturesque and popular on the island for its crystal clear water or a place to sip a cold drink at one of the beach bars. Taormina is also an ideal jumping-off point for wine-tasting tours on Mt. Etna's slopes, or a visit to the nearby city of Catania.

As you depart Taormina, be sure to find a nice spot on deck and enjoy scenic cruising of the Stromboli Volcano. One of eight Lipari Islands off the north coast of Sicily, tiny Stromboli is the most active and home to the second-most-active volcano on Earth, one that's been erupting continuously for more than 2,000 years. The volcano perfectly matches one’s image of the legendary geographical feature - cone-shaped, topped by a fiery crater that spews fountains of glowing red lava - best seen at night.

Please note: This port is accessed by tender boats. Boarding and disembarking tender boats may involve steps and uneven surfaces. While cruise lines strive to provide ease of access, accessibility options can vary at different tender ports. Passengers with mobility concerns are encouraged to inquire about specific arrangements and consider their individual needs when participating in tendering activities.

Day 23 Palermo, Sicily, Italy

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

Palermo, Sicily's capital, is a blend of old and new, and a canvas upon which the region's complex, ever-shifting history has been painted. Over the centuries, the port of Palermo was controlled by forces from the far corners, from Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans, to Arabs from North Africa, and then Normans from France, who oversaw a Renaissance during which many of Palermo's iconic landmarks and modern attractions were built.

Within the city itself, explore the attractions in historic neighbourhoods such as the Arab district of La Kalsa, home to the finery-filled Palazzo Mirto. The Quattro Canti (Four Corners) lies in the heart of the old city, with Piazza Pretoria on the corner. From there it's only a short distance to Palermo's Norman Palace, another UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Palermo's star attractions, which houses the Palatine Chapel, famous for its intricate mosaics.

Palermo is also a perfect jumping-off point for sightseeing excursions to the idyllic beaches of Mondello, the Mediaeval coastal town of Cefalù and the mountain village of Monreale, which is known for its exceptional Norman cathedral.

In modern times, Australians, New Zealanders and history buffs will take the most interest in the Gallipoli Peninsula on the northern shore at the mouth of the Dardanelles. For it was here, in 1915, that the legend of the Anzac spirit of courage, loyalty and friendship was born.
