Day 8 Eidfjord, Norway

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 15:00

In the shadow of snowy peaks and near stunning blue-green fjords, Eidfjord is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful villages in Norway. Even though it has a population of less than 1,000, scores of visitors come here each year to bask in the area's natural splendour.

Hardangervidda, near Eidfjord, is Europe's largest mountain plateau as well as Norway's largest national park. Interestingly, the legendary polar explorer Roald Amundsen, who led the first expedition to reach the South Pole, and Fridtjof Nansen, who made the first successful crossing of the Greenland interior, both used Hardangervidda to prepare for their expeditions. Walking, hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing are popular and the area is home to Europe's largest population of wild reindeer.

Numerous canyons, including the famous Måbødalen Valley, lead south from the Hardangervidda plateau to the fjords along the coast and about 16 kilometres (10 miles) south of Eidfjord, visitors can see the dramatic 182-meter-tall (597-foot-tall) Vøringfossen waterfall. In the centre of Eidfjord stands the 14th-century stone Eidfjord Kirke, while outside town the famous Kjeåsen Mountain Farm sits on a ledge some 600 metres (1,968 feet) above the Simadalsfjord.

Day 9 Alesund, Norway

Arrive: 10:00 - Depart: 22:00

Ålesund, a quaint fishing town of approximately 45,000 in western Norway, has been called Norway’s most beautiful city. A fire in 1904 the town was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style, also known as Jugendstil, that was popular around the turn of the 20th century. A year later, Norway gained its independence from Sweden leading to a campaign to build a 'Norwegian town' to mark the creation of the new nation. The colourful buildings feature castle-like turrets and spires with intricate facades of ornamental flowers, gargoyles and Viking-inspired decorations.

Bordering the Norwegian Sea, this area is also famous for its mountain ranges and fjords. For those looking for a more active visit, Ålesund offers great hiking, mountain biking and kayaking. One of the highlights is climbing the 418 steps that lead up Mount Aksla for a spectacular view of the city and the Sunnmøre Alps. Nearby is the Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its beautiful waterfalls. This is also home to Atlanterhavsparken, or the Atlantic Sea Park, one of the largest aquariums in Europe.

Overnight: Holland America 'MS Rotterdam'

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 10 Nordfjordeid, Norway

Enjoy scenic cruising of this picturesque fjord as you head to Nordfjordeid. Once in the heart of Nordfjordeid town, you'll find a variety of cozy cafés, boutique shops, an art centre as well as a beach and park. Not far away lies a notable historical gem: Norway's largest Viking ship, the Myklebust Skipet.

Overnight: Holland America 'MS Rotterdam'

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 11 Bergen, Norway

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

Beautiful Bergen, Norway’s second-largest city, is one of the most popular ports of call while cruising the fjords. Step off the ship into the Mediaeval Bryggen wharf area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, where small boats line the harbour and wooden gabled buildings stand proud along the waterfront. Bergen’s rich maritime tradition goes back nearly 1,000 years, including the years the town played an important part in the Hanseatic League, the trading empire that dominated maritime commerce in the region between the 14th and 18th centuries. The city is one of Europe’s oldest settlements and its cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways lead to emerald-green parks, Mediaeval cathedrals and centuries-old stone fortresses. The city is also eminently walkable, with historic buildings and excellent markets selling everything from fish and produce to trinkets and souvenirs.

Surrounded by mountains and thick forest, sitting halfway between Geiranger to the north and Stavanger to the south, Bergen offers plenty to do outside of the city too. Whether you sign up for a guided excursion or venture out on your own, you’ll be sure to fall in love with Bergen.

Day 9 Haugesund or Stavanger, Norway

Haugesund, Norway (26 May 2025 Departure)
Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 16:00

The town of Haugesund in the southern county of Rogaland, is an historical centre of the country’s Viking rulers. Norway’s first king, Harald Fairhair lived nearby and began his rule in the latter half of the 9th century. He and several other early kings are buried in a mound along the Karmsundet Strait. Today, Norwegians know the town as a cultural centre with popular music and film festivals, as well as for being a beneficiary of Norway’s petroleum wealth.

As in many Scandinavian port towns, a long row of handsome old commercial buildings line the Smedasundet waterfront, today housing busy restaurants. A block inland, the Haraldsgata pedestrian street offers a folk museum, the Neo-Gothic styled Our Savior’s Church and plenty of shopping. At the edge of town, a huge granite obelisk erected in 1872 commemorates the 1,000th anniversary of the Battle of Hafrsfjord, when Harald Fairhair led his forces to victory and united Norway in the process. It is also easy to jourrney from Haugesund to the massive glacier fields of Folgefonna National Park and to the 612-metre-high Langfoss waterfall.

Stavanger, Norway (23 June 2025 Departure)
Arrive: 09:00 - Depart: 18:00

This port city on Norway’s western coast, once a small shipbuilding and fish-canning town, is now the epicentre of “black gold” North Sea oil. Fuelled by its wealth as one of the world’s top energy capitals, Stavanger is now home to top-notch fusion restaurants and a bustling nightlife.

Stavanger has held on to its heritage and soul with archaeological museums and reconstructed settlements paying reverence to the city’s Viking past. The cobblestoned Old Town is a well-preserved core of white wooden cottages near an Anglo-Norman cathedral, the oldest in Norway. Natural beauty abounds, too, with the nearby Lysefjord and its impressive Preikestolen (“The Pulpit Rock”).

Overnight: Holland America 'MS Rotterdam'

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 10 Mandal (Kristiansand), Norway

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

Mandal is your gateway to visit Kristiansand (approximately 40 kilometres) and is accessible by taxi, bus or a Holland America shore excursion.

The city of Kristiansand evokes the atmosphere of yesteryear, with small white cottages and a grid pattern of streets. It is set between the harbour on two sides and the Otra River on the third side. Located in the south of Norway, the climate is slightly warmer and nearby beaches make it a popular holiday destination for locals.

Please note: This port is accessed by tender boats. Boarding and disembarking tender boats may involve steps and uneven surfaces. While cruise lines strive to provide ease of access, accessibility options can vary at different tender ports. Passengers with mobility concerns are encouraged to inquire about specific arrangements and consider their individual needs when participating in tendering activities.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:

Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.
