Being the capital of the People's Republic of China, Beijing is the nation's political, economic and cultural centre. Located in north China, close to the port city of Tianjin and partially surrounded by Hebei Province, it also serves as the most important transportation hub and port of entry. As one of the six ancient cities in China, Beijing has been the heart and soul of politics throughout its long history and consequently, there is an unparalleled wealth of discovery to delight and intrigue travellers as they explore the city's ancient past and exciting modern development. Now it has become one of the most popular travel destinations in the world with about 140 million Chinese tourists and 4.4 million international visitors in a year.

Please note:
• Some travellers may depart on Day 0.
• Some travellers may have an overnight layover in China with accommodation and transfers provided by the airline.
• Some travellers may have an overnight layover in an Australian city with airport accommodation provided (excluding transfers).
• Some travellers may arrive early in the morning of Day 2.

Overnight: Beijing Friendship Hotel or similar

Meals included: In-Flight

Day 2 Tiananmen Square & Forbidden City (or Temple of Heaven)

After breakfast, your exploration of Beijing begins with a visit to a pearl factory where you can learn about cultivating fresh pearls. You'll then visit Tiananmen Square, one of the largest public squares in the world, before stopping by the Imperial Palace in the Forbidden City. The Forbidden City, known officially as the Imperial Palace Museum, was originally constructed by the third Emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Yong Le Emperor Zhu Di, in the early 15th century. The palace was built between 1406 and 1420 but has been burnt down, rebuilt, sacked and renovated countless times so most of the architecture you can see today dates from the 1700s onwards.

Optional Tour: The Golden Mask Dynasty - 350 RMB per person (paid on tour)
Tonight, take the opportunity to attend an optional large-scale dramatic musical, "The Golden Mask Dynasty".

Please note:
• There is a daily limit on the number of tickets available for The Forbidden City, therefore entry cannot be guaranteed and is subject to availability. In the event that tickets can not be secured, a visit to The Temple of Heaven will be offered instead.
• The Temple of Heaven, founded in the first half of the 15th century, is a dignified complex of fine cult buildings that are set in gardens and surrounded by historic pine woods. In its overall layout, it symbolises the relationship between earth and heaven which stands at the heart of Chinese cosmogony and also recognises the special role played by the emperors within that relationship.
• Scheduling of attractions and activities may be alternated for the days in Beijing (Days 2 to 4).

Overnight: Beijing Friendship Hotel or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3 Great Wall of China

After breakfast, you'll travel to a jade museum to learn about the history of jade and observe skilled artisans at work as they create their intricate designs. In Chinese, jade is pronounced as “Yu” and has a history of at least four thousand years in China.

You'll then take a scenic drive through the countryside and mountains to reach China’s most renowned monument, the Great Wall. Along the way, you'll enjoy stopping for a delicious Peking Duck lunch which is one of Beijing's most famous dishes (vegetarian options will be available also). On arrival at the Great Wall, you'll visit the less-touristy and more original Juyong Pass, avoiding other sections that are the most accessible and consequently, the most crowded. The Great Wall meanders through China’s northern mountain ranges from the Yellow Sea to the Gobi Desert, a distance of more than 5,600 kilometres.

Optional Tour: Hutong Pedicab Tour & Dinner - 360 RMB per person (paid on tour)
In the afternoon, take the opportunity to join an optional tour of Beijing’s 700-year-old Hutongs area by old-fashioned pedicab. You will also visit a local family to experience the local customs and enjoy a delicious home-cooked dinner. The optional tour also includes visiting Shichahai, a historic scenic area consisting of three lakes (Qianhai, Houhai and Xihai) which surround places of historic interest, scenic beauty and remnants of old-style hutong and courtyard local residences.

Please note:
• Scheduling of attractions and activities may be alternated for the days in Beijing (Days 2 to 4).
• The old-fashioned pedicab operation may be suspended without prior notice and a replacement optional tour will be offered.

Day 4 Beijing – Xi'an (High-Speed Train Experience)

After breakfast this morning, you'll make a stop at ‘Tongrentang’ to learn about traditional Chinese medicine. Afterwards, you'll travel by high-speed train (or domestic flight) to Xian where, upon arrival, a tour representative will meet you to escort you to the hotel.

Xi'an, located in central-northwest China, records the great changes of the country just like a living history book. Called Chang'an (the eternal city) in ancient times, it is one of the birthplaces of the ancient Chinese civilization in the Yellow River Basin area. As the eastern terminal of the Silk Road and the site of the famous Terracotta Warriors of the Qin Dynasty, the city has a reputation worldwide. More than 3,000 years of history, including over 1,100 years as the capital city of ancient dynasties, have endowed the city with an amazing historical heritage.

Please note:
• High-speed train tickets are subject to availability. If train tickets are unavailable, a domestic flight will be provided to Xian in place of this train journey. Train or flight tickets will be confirmed in your travel documentation which will arrive 4-6 weeks prior to your departure date or, in some cases, provided by your tour guide on arrival in China.
• If you do not provide your passport details at least 60 days prior to departure, you may not be in the same train carriage or on the same train as your companions and other group members.
• Seating arrangements on high-speed trains consist of a row of 2 seats and a row of 3 seats. Due to this, TripADeal cannot guarantee you a seat right next to your travel companion on this journey.
• Scheduling of attractions and activities may be alternated for the days in Beijing (Days 2 to 4).

Overnight: Metropark Huanyu Hotel or similar

Day 5 Terracotta Warriors & Horses

The highlight today is visiting the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum. Unearthed near Xi’an, the thousands of life-size sculptures of soldiers, chariots and horses are considered a world wonder. With different facial expressions and weaponry adorning each soldier, the Terracotta Warriors were believed to have been created to accompany the Qin Emperor into the afterlife. This site is among the top archaeological excavations of the 20th century so you're sure to be amazed by the scale of the Terracotta Warriors Army. Afterwards, you'll visit the Terracotta Warriors Reproduction Factory.

Overnight: Metropark Huanyu Hotel or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 Xian - Chengdu (High-Speed Train Experience) - Chengdu Sightseeing Tour

Today you'll transfer to the Xian Railway Station for a high-speed train ride to Chengdu which will take approximately 4 hours.

Located in the west of Sichuan Basin and in the centre of Chengdu Plain, the city covers a total area of 12.3 thousand square kilometres (4,749 square miles) with a population of over 11 million.

Upon arrival, you'll visit Kuanzhai Alley, one of Chengdu’s three historic conservation districts. Constructed in 1718 during the early years of the Qing Dynasty, this charming pedestrian thoroughfare is home to an eclectic mix of classic Sichuan architecture, modern cafes and smart boutiques. As you explore, listen to commentary from your guide about the district's history and design while seeing how some of the city’s old establishments (local restaurants, traditional teahouses and Chinese calligraphy demonstrations) sit alongside the new.

Afterwards, you'll drive onwards to Emeishan City, located in the shadow of Mount Emei (Emeishan) which is the highest of the country's four sacred Buddhist mountains at 3099 metres. On arrival, you'll check into your hotel for an evening at leisure or you can join another optional tour.

Afterwards, you'll transfer to Chengdu Airport for an approximately 1.5-hour domestic flight to Lijiang. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel accommodation. Lijiang, an attractive tourist destination in Yunnan Province, is considered a fairyland blessed with fresh air, clear streams, breathtaking snowy mountains and an undisturbed landscape inhabited by friendly people. It exercises jurisdiction over four counties as well as an Old Town District. This is also the main region inhabited by the Naxi People, one of China's 55 minority ethnic groups.

Overnight: Xianghe No.1 Holiday Hotel or similar

Day 9 Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Today is your chance to discover some of China’s most wild and beautiful mountain scenery on a full-day tour of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

After breakfast, you'll drive approximately 40 kilometres to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain where you will explore Ganhaizi Meadow and Baishuhe River. You'll take a cable car to Spruce Meadow and visit the Blue Moon Valley which is home to a turquoise river passing over the beautiful terraced valley, forming four large colourful lakes and dozens of miniature whitewater waterfalls.

The mountain is the southernmost snow-capped mountain in China and is the ocean glacier nearest to the equator of all the snow mountains in Eurasia. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain has 13 peaks, stretching 35 kilometres from north to south, while Shanzidou, the main peak, is 5,596 meters above sea level. All year round, snow falls on the peaks which are frequently lost in clouds and fog. Looking from a distance, the mountain resembles a Jade Dragon, which is how it got its name.

After lunch, you will have the opportunity to join an optional activity before heading back to Lijiang. Along the way, you'll enjoy a stroll through Baisha Old Town, an enchanting traditional Naxi-style old town, and see the Baisha Mural.

Optional Activity: Impression Lijiang Ethnic Show - 360 RMB per person
Directed by Zhang Yimou and held in Ganhazi Meadow about 3100 metres above sea level.

Overnight: Xianghe No.1 Holiday Hotel or similar

Overnight: Ramada Plaza Hotel or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 11 Changsha - Zhangjiajie

If you were impressed by the Hallelujah Mountains in the film Avatar, you'll look forward to seeing the real ones in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. There are approximately 243 peaks plus more than 3,000 pinnacles and spires in China's first National Forest Park. Scenes from the film come to mind when the peaks are caught in the right light or when the early morning mountain mist rolls in around them.

This morning, you'll drive to Zhangjiajie and take a one-way Ten-Li Gallery Monorail Train to see one of the most famous attractions in the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, the Ten-Li Natural Gallery. Here you'll see dense woods, fragrant flowers and impressive rock formations that make the valley seem like a natural art gallery. On both sides of the walking path, you might also see over 200 rocks that vividly mimic human and animal profiles. Many natural pictures formed on the precipices seem like paintings hanging on the cliffs.

Afterwards, you'll visit Gold Whip Stream, a brook at the foot of the towering mountains. The 400-metre-high cliff by Gold Whip Stream is spectacular and you'll have the chance to spot wild monkeys along the stream. You'll then finish the day at your hotel for an evening at leisure.

The Guinness World Records confirms it as the highest and fastest elevator with the maximum loading capacity in the world. It reaches the mountain top in two minutes and you'll be shocked at the sight of the mountains before their eyes. Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Beijing
Beijing, the capital city of China, experiences a continental climate with four distinct seasons. Here's a breakdown of the climate in Beijing:
• Summer (June to August): Summers in Beijing are hot and humid, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C. July is the hottest month, with temperatures occasionally rising above 35°C. Thunderstorms are common during the summer months, bringing brief relief from the heat but also occasional heavy rainfall.
• Autumn (September to November): Autumn is one of the most pleasant seasons in Beijing, characterized by mild temperatures and clear skies. September can still be warm, but temperatures gradually decrease as the season progresses. This season is popular for tourism due to the comfortable weather and the colourful foliage.
• Winter (December to February): Winters in Beijing are cold and dry, with temperatures often dropping below freezing. December and January are the coldest months, with daytime temperatures averaging between -3°C to 4°C. Nighttime temperatures can drop well below freezing, reaching as low as -10°C or lower.
• Spring (March to May): Spring in Beijing is relatively short but marked by fluctuating temperatures and occasional dust storms. March can still be chilly, but temperatures gradually warm up by May. Spring is also a season of increased rainfall, which helps alleviate dry conditions but can also lead to occasional flooding. Beijing's climate is influenced by its inland location and surrounding mountains, which can result in temperature extremes between seasons. Additionally, air pollution, especially during the winter months, can be a concern in Beijing due to factors such as coal burning for heating and industrial emissions.

• Autumn (September to November): Mild and comfortable, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C. Autumn is generally a pleasant season with lower humidity.
• Winter (December to February): Cool and damp, with temperatures ranging from around 2°C to 12°C. It can be overcast during the winter months, and occasional light snowfall is possible.
• Spring (March to May): Temperatures start to rise, and the weather becomes more pleasant. Spring temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C.
Chengdu is known for its relatively mild and humid climate throughout the year. It experiences more rainfall in the summer, and occasional fog can occur during the winter months.

Some countries will refuse entry if you are unable to present your certificate. It's also common for your home country to request a Yellow Fever certificate upon arrival. You must check with your doctor well before leaving home about the Yellow Fever requirements for the countries you'll be visiting.

Gratuities/Tipping
Land
Tipping is a firm and customary element of the tourism industry and is therefore highly recommended. The expected tipping amount is $12 AUD or 60 RMB per person per day. While tipping is not mandatory, it is a common practice in China and a gesture of appreciation which is shared amongst the local guides, drivers and other staff members who have serviced your tour. The tipping amount can be paid in AUD or RMB to your expert tour guide in each region. As most tour guides in China consider tipping a part of their income, please don’t feel intimidated should the tour guides approach you as they bid you farewell.

Please note: Tipping for services provided is always a matter of personal discretion; however, please be aware that many locals consider tipping part of their normal remuneration, and they may approach you for payment; there's no need to be intimidated by the request.

Yangtze Cruise
Gratuities (tips) are not included for the cruise staff's services throughout this tour's cruise component. Gratuities are expected on your cruise and will be charged 150 RMB total for the 4-night cruise. If you have any questions regarding the gratuities on your cruise, please speak to the guest services staff onboard the ship.

Sightseeing
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Shopping
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts. Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

China
A tourist visa for China is a strict requirement if travelling on an Australian Passport. The recent announcement of Visa-free travel for Australian citizens to China will not apply to this deal as the visa waiver program is for stays of up to 15 days.

Please note: As of today you are required to attend a Chinese Visa Application Service Centre in person to apply for a visa or use a registered agent to apply on your behalf. China Visa Application Service Centres can be found in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane. You must attend the China Visa Application Service Centre relevant to the state you reside in. Please visit https://www.visaforchina.cn/ for more information. You will be able to start your visa application process once you receive your final travel documentation approximately 6 weeks prior to departure.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.

Please note:
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.
