Day 29 Isle of Mull Scenic Cruising

The sight of the island is dominated by the Mull mountains, a beautiful combination of grey granite and green slopes. From the ocean, you'll see small coastal towns including the colourful seafront houses of Tobermory that were made famous by the CBBC series Balamory.

Nestled in the cracks and crevices of the shore is an abundance of wildlife including otters and grey seals. In deeper waters swim larger marine mammals including common and bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoises and even minke whales. Lucky visitors might even spot orca that sometimes come to the area, lured by the pupping seal population. Most elusive of all is the basking shark, this is the second-largest fish in the world so keep your eyes peeled for its fin or tail peeking out from the water as it feeds on the plankton clouds under the waves.

The Isle of Mull is also known as Eagle Island as the area is home to the densest population of breeding golden eagles in the world. These are Scotland’s national birds and are truly a sight to behold. Rarer than this are sightings of the white-tailed eagle as this majestic creature disappeared from the islands for over a century, only to return in the 1980s. With a 2.5 metre wingspan, they are difficult to miss once they decide to take flight from the craggy clifftops. Alongside these winged giants, you can see grey herons, oystercatchers, puffins and many others along the coastline.

Day 33 South Queensferry (Edinburgh), Scotland

As you set sail upon the River Forth to South Queensferry, you’ll witness the magnificent rail bridge and its interlaced metalwork that spans the cold waters of the Firth of Forth estuary in the distance.

Queensferry is somewhat defined by the road and rail bridges that stand on either side of the town and dominate the skyline. The town slopes up from the shore and so the streets are intriguingly stepped to cope with the gradient. You'll find that yhe houses are colourful, the shops quirky and the streets very narrow.

South Queensferry, known as ‘The Ferry’ to locals, is a pretty town with winding lanes and historic attractions. Inchcolm Abbey is one of the top attractions in the town as it is one of the best-preserved monastic buildings in Scotland. You are also well advised to admire the Forth Bridge, an incredible cantilever railway bridge and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It's only a 20-minute ride to Edinburgh from South Queensferry and this outstanding city is a different proposition altogether. The incredible architecture and majestic buildings seem to spill over from the extinct volcano that's now known as Arthur’s Seat. Edinburgh Castle crowns the city on top of the hill and has done so for well over a thousand years as Scottish monarchs commissioned these grand buildings as demonstrations of their wealth, power and sophistication.

Many would say that Tromso’s vibrant culinary scene is at its peak along the city’s main street of Storgata. You’ll find that many of the restaurants also function as cafes and pubs, offering different but equally delicious menus throughout the day. This is a favourite destination for keen skiers as the snowy peaks glide gently downward towards stretches of white sandy beaches that surround the port itself. Day 45 Stavanger, Norway

Once the European Capital of Culture, the Norwegian city of Stavanger is blessed with compelling history and unbridled beauty that effortlessly blends the old with the new. Stavanger is the epitome of charm with a characterful mix of ancient houses and modern architecture that offers an ever-present nod to the past. From its ancient port, the city fans out along a network of islands that are each connected to its neighbour by an elegant bridge.

In the city’s oldest neighbourhood of Gamle Stavanger, 18th-century wooden buildings and artists’ workshops still dominate the streets, much as they did in years gone by. You'll also find that the Canning Museum (Norsk Hermetikkmuseum) and Stavanger Museum offer an enriching glimpse into Stavanger’s maritime history. Those seeking a postcard-worthy view should aim for The Guards’ Museum in Valbergtårnet (Valberg Tower), otherwise the exquisite craftsmanship and Gothic architecture of The Anglo-Norman Stavanger Cathedral will no doubt delight.

You’ll find a choice of restaurants near the harbour offering native Norwegian delicacies such as locally reared elk, reindeer and venison. Seafood is first-class in Stavanger and a visit to TORJÅ fiskedisken (fish market) is an excellent opportunity to see the day’s fresh catch being sold at the source. For a low-key bite at lunchtime, try a smørbrød (an open sandwich topped with meat, fish or cheese) or Koldtbord (a variety of hot and cold dishes offered for a fixed price on an ‘eat all you like’ basis).

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.
Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Mediterranean
The weather in the Mediterranean during August and September generally tends to be hot and sunny, with temperatures often ranging from 25 to 35°C. However, it can vary depending on the specific location within the Mediterranean region. Coastal areas may experience slightly milder temperatures due to the sea breeze, while inland areas can get hotter. Additionally, it's not uncommon for occasional heat waves to occur during this time, resulting in even higher temperatures.

United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, September marks the transition from summer to autumn, bringing gradually cooler temperatures and changing weather patterns. Average temperatures in September typically range from around 10 to 18°C across the country. Southern regions such as London and the southeast tend to experience slightly warmer temperatures, with daytime highs often reaching the mid to upper teens Celsius. Northern areas like Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland, as well as cities in northern England such as Manchester and Leeds, may see slightly cooler temperatures, with highs generally in the low to mid-teens Celsius. September in the UK can be quite variable in terms of weather, with a mix of sunny days, overcast skies, and occasional rainfall. While there are still opportunities for pleasant outdoor activities, it's advisable to be prepared for cooler temperatures, especially in the evenings, and to pack layers and waterproof clothing for any outdoor excursions.

Norway
In Norway, September sees average temperatures ranging from 8 to 15 °C, with milder conditions in the south and cooler temperatures in the north. October brings further cooling, with averages of 4 to 10 °C. Days shorten, and daylight decreases as autumn progresses. Southern areas may maintain daytime highs in the low to mid-teens Celsius early in October, but temperatures drop later. Northern regions experience cooler temperatures, often in single digits Celsius. Weather varies with sunny days, overcast skies, and occasional rainfall. Early snowfall is possible, especially in the north. Layered clothing is advisable for fluctuating conditions.
