Day 2 Negombo – Sigiriya – Habarana

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning before check-out and proceeding to Sigiriya (around 3-hour travel time).

Upon arrival, it’s time to visit the ancient Lion’s Rock Fortress of Sigiriya. Today, you will find yourself in the heart of Sri Lanka, where the 5th-century rock citadel of King Kasyapa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, awaits your exploration.

Sigiriya isn't just a testament to ancient Sri Lankan engineering and urban planning prowess; it's a true masterpiece of art and culture. As you step through the colossal 'Lion Paws,' which gaze upon the meticulously designed royal gardens below, you will be transported back in time to an era of ancient wonders. This rock fortress, encircled by imposing ramparts and moats, is often likened to the mythical 'City of Gods'. One of the most captivating features of Sigiriya is its stunning frescoes, reminiscent of the Gupta-style paintings found in the famous Ajanta caves of India. These ancient artworks adorn the rock's surface, offering a glimpse into the artistic brilliance of the past. Wander into the museum downstairs for an insight into how the citadel floated above citizens and learn about the advanced ponds and irrigation that pumped water right onto its summit through an ingenious hydraulic system.

After taking in the magnificent rock fortress, continue a short drive to Habarana to the hotel.

Overnight: Cinnamon Lodge or similar, Habarana

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3 Habarana – Polonnaruwa – Minneriya - Habarana

After an early breakfast at the hotel, the day is yours to choose. Either spend the day at leisure or you can take part in one or both of the day's optional tours, a Polonnaruwa city tour and a Minneriya safari.

Optional Activity: Morning Polonnaruwa City Tour - $110 AUD per person
Rising with the decline of Anuradhapura, the city of Polonnaruwa - the medieval capital and crown jewel of King Parakramabahu I - remains superior proof of ancient culture and heritage blended with religious beliefs. Walk among the scattered walls of this World Heritage Site, dotted with stupas, resting Buddha statues, irrigation canals and fantastically carved Hindu sculptures – while observing the relic house - Vatadage - which boasts impressive stone carvings. Look closely, and you will notice a subtle Hindu influence on the architecture and statues found in Polonnaruwa. Enjoy lunch along with a cooking demo in Polonnaruwa.

Optional Activity: Jeep safari in Minneriya National Park - $115 per person
Experience an afternoon safari at Minneriya National Park. If you're up for a serious rumble in the jungle, then Minneriya is the place to go! Spread over 8800 hectares, it's a sanctuary for elephants and home to herds of deer and ample birdlife, but its spotlight remains between swaying trunks and flapping ears. Park your jeep on the bank of the reservoir and switch off its engine. Have the opportunity to seek out for herds of elephants - they like to one by one roll onto the grass-covered banks to feed on tender shoots. In fact, this is the largest elephant gathering known in the world (over 300 at a time) – it's an absolute must-do for wildlife enthusiasts. Please note: If Minneriya National Park is flooded during the rainy season, you will visit Kaudulla or Eco National Parks as alternative options. Return to the hotel on completion and relax

Overnight: Cinnamon Lodge or similar, Habarana

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4 Habarana – Kandy

After breakfast at the hotel this morning, check out and proceed to Kandy (around 3 hours of travel time).

In the afternoon, take part in a guided city tour of Kandy. Last ruled by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe before it was brought under British rule in 1815, Kandy – the World Heritage Site & last royal capital of Sri Lankan kings – crafts an array of culture, history and heritage in the minds of visitors across the globe.

A stroll across this small lakeside town - cradled among the misty hills - will feature the Kandy City Centre - bundled with the latest and world-class brands, a bazaar, an arts & crafts centre, gem museum & lapidary. Take in the colours as you glide through fresh fruits and vegetables in the Kandy market.

Fine-tune your evening by stepping to the beat of traditional music and drumming, amplified by a cultural show enhancing the rich and vibrant culture of the Wonder of Sri Lanka.

Overnight: Grand Kandyan Hotel or similar, Kandy

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5 Kandy – Nuwara Eliya

After breakfast at the hotel, check-out and proceed to Nuwara Eliya (around 2.5 hours of travel time).

En-route, visit a tea plantation and learn about the rich tea history of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka, tea and tourism are words which cannot be separated. Take a tour to the cold & misty hills that take pride in an ultimate tea tour, covering lush green blankets of tea plantations. Visit a tea factory processing the prestigious brand of Ceylon tea, to observe a rich tradition kept alive up to date. As you observe the hissing and swishing of machines, inhaling the heavenly scent arising from these facilities, make sure to end the tour in style over a perfectly blended cup of pure Ceylon tea.

Following the tour of the tea plantation, travel to Nuwara Eliya and join a city tour in Nuwara Eliya before checking into the hotel. Nuwara Eliya sits beneath the towering Pidurutalagala mountain in a bowl of verdant, tea-covered hills. Sri Lanka’s highest town is in the heart of the southern hill country, possibly the most beautiful part of Sri Lanka. Although the region was once occupied by the Kandyan kingdom, the town itself is very much a British creation. It was established in the mid-19th century as a retreat by Sir Edward Barnes and touted as Sri Lanka’s ‘Little England’ for the way this Victorian relic resembles a quaint English country village.

Overnight: Jetwing St. Andrews Hotel or similar, Nuwara Eliya

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 Nuwara Eliya

Today, either enjoy breakfast at the hotel or if you choose to take the optional tour, you will depart early with a packed breakfast.

The day is yours to choose either at leisure or take part in an optional activity, Horton Plains.

Optional activity: Horton Plains - $115 AUD per person
With a packed breakfast from the hotel, travel to trek the Horton Plains.
The Horton Plains National Park is among the most beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world. The park is spread over the second and third highest mountains in Sri Lanka, called Kirigalpotta and Totapola. The plateau-like structure with plains on one end, thick forests and mountains on the other, make the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. You will find several waterfalls, lakes, rocky hills and views of the ocean in this part of the country. The forest is home to a number of wild animals and birds. If you're cautious enough, you may be greeted by the sights of a grunting wild boar, a pouncing fishing cat, otters or even the Sri Lankan leopard!
On completion, return to the hotel and relax.

Overnight: Jetwing St. Andrews Hotel or similar, Nuwara Eliya

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7 Nuwara Eliya – Galle

After breakfast at the hotel, check-out and travel to Galle (around 5-hour travel time).

Proceed on a city tour on arrival, and learn the fascinating history of this remarkable city.

The epic southern capital, Galle, is an intersection where classic Dutch architecture meets a tropical setting, creating a vivid atmosphere in beauty. Walk the Dutch-haunted streets, listen to the creaking wooden saloon doors and observe how European architecture mingles with South Asian traditions today, flooding cultural enthusiasts on a global scale. Its original ramparts and bastions, preserved up to date, showcase evidence of a heritage preserved for more than 350 years. Walk clockwise within the fort to observe the 'old gate', carrying the british coat of arms. Flanking the old gate is the Zwart Bastion - the Portuguese-built oldest of all - and the lighthouse, standing 18 feet in its glory next to the Point Utrecht Bastion.

This Dutch bliss is painted with streets that spread in a rectangular grid pattern pierced with houses carrying Dutch colonial style verandas. Hop into the Dutch Hospital Shopping Complex to be mesmerised by an array of souvenir selections. However, its hallmark stands as a place where you can find its usual buzz of administrative offices, court complexes, commercial buildings, churches and southern folks frequenting its streets bracing the air of the elysium of architecture of Galle. Visit the Galle Museum and experience the cultural & social heritage of the southern province of Sri Lanka.

A throbbing metropolis, Colombo - located on the island's west – is not only the country's commercial capital, but also a turbine that drives over 50% of the national GDP. Drive along the clean streets, edging the crystal white racecourse. Feel the buzz surrounding the upcoming development, the Colombo Port City – an offshore city featuring parks, commercial complexes & even an F1 track!

Head along Bauddhaloka Mawatha towards 'Arcade' facing a historic road post, the Independence Square. Smell the scent of incense while listening to the chiming bells of Gangarama Temple. Or jazz up to Colombo's nightlife, spiced by night clubs & casinos that borderline its bustle. TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.
Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for Visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
