Day 5 Wilpattu - Sigiriya

After breakfast at the hotel, it’s time to travel to Sigiriya where you will visit the ancient Lion’s Rock Fortress of Sigiriya in the heart of Sri Lanka. The 5th-century rock citadel of King Kasyapa isn't just a testament to ancient Sri Lankan engineering and urban planning prowess, it's a true masterpiece of art and culture. As you step through the colossal 'Lion Paws' which gaze upon the meticulously designed royal gardens below, you will be transported back in time to an era of ancient wonders. This UNESCO-listed rock fortress, encircled by imposing ramparts and moats, is often likened to the mythical 'City of Gods'.

One of the most captivating features of Sigiriya is its stunning frescoes, reminiscent of the Gupta-style paintings found in the famous Ajanta caves of India. These ancient artworks adorn the rock's surface, offering a glimpse into the artistic brilliance of the past. Wander into the museum downstairs for an insight into how the citadel floated above citizens and learn about the advanced ponds and irrigation that pumped water right onto its summit through an ingenious hydraulic system.

Please note:
• Make sure to carry a bottle of water and a face towel to keep yourself refreshed in the tropical heat.
• While the frescoes are a sight to behold, refrain from taking pictures as it is considered a punishable offence in accordance with the rules set by the archaeological department.

As you stroll the mediaeval capital and crown jewel of King Parakramabahu I, take a moment to observe the relic house of Vatadage which boasts impressive stone carvings. Look closely, and you will notice a subtle Hindu influence on the architecture and statues found in Polonnaruwa.

This is the largest elephant gathering in the world (over 300 at a time) so it's an absolute must-do for wildlife enthusiasts.
Please note: If Minneriya National Park is flooded during the rainy season, you will visit Kaudulla or Eco National Parks as alternative options.

Overnight: Tropical Life Resort & Spa or similar

Day 7 Sigiriya – Dambulla - Kandy

After breakfast at the hotel, you'll proceed to Dambulla to visit the famed Dambulla Rock Temple. In the city of Dambulla lies a hub that has been treasured by many kings since the 1st century B.C. Today, an icon in the face of Sri Lanka, Dambulla Rock Temple houses some of the most unique drawings in magnificently constructed five cave temples flanking the golden temple of Dambulla. Observe how exquisite cave paintings along the walls shelter 150 statues of Lord Buddha and take a moment to look straight up at the gigantic Buddha statue glittering in gold, an important junction in the country's economic and cultural uplifting.

Afterwards, you'll travel to the hill city of Kandy and check into the hotel. As evening falls, you'll enjoy a tour of Kandy City. Last ruled by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe before it was brought under British rule in 1815, Kandy is the last royal capital of Sri Lankan kings and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that celebrates its culture, history and heritage. As you stroll across this small lakeside town to the Kandy City Centre, you'll find world-class brands, a bazaar, an arts & crafts centre, a gem museum and a lapidary. Make sure to take in the dazzling colours as you glide through fresh fruits and vegetables in the Kandy market.

Overnight: Skyloft Hotel, Kandy or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8 Kandy – Nuwara Eliya

After breakfast, you'll depart for Nuwara Eliya which is Sri Lanka’s highest town and the heart of the country’s most beautiful region. In the southern hill country, Nuwara Eliya sits beneath the towering Pidurutalagala mountain in a bowl of verdant, tea-covered hills. Although the region was once occupied by the Kandyan kingdom, the town itself is of British creation as it was established in the mid-19th century as a retreat by Sir Edward Barnes.

Upon arrival in the afternoon, take a tour of a local tea plantation and learn about the tea production process of the prestigious Ceylon Tea brand. As you observe the hissing and swishing of machines, inhale the heavenly scent arising from these facilities and make sure to end your tour in style over a perfectly blended cup of pure Ceylon tea. Afterwards, enjoy time to explore the plantation at leisure before continuing onwards to enjoy some free time in Nuwara Eliya or an optional tour of the Moon Plains.

Optional Activity: Trek Moon Plains - $15 per person
The Moon Plains used to be a part of a catchment area as a 400-metre-long and 30-metre-deep valley until the late 1990s. The scenery is so beautiful that you feel like you are in a different world. Expect a surreal experience as you explore the lunar-like terrain, surrounded by the beauty of Sri Lanka's diverse and picturesque natural scenery.

Day 9 Nuwara Eliya - Horton Plains

Today you'll take a packed breakfast from the hotel and proceed to visit Horton Plains. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a trekker's paradise and eco-tourism hideout in the heart of the isle. Painted with unending stretches of green pastures, it marks one of the healthiest wet montane evergreen forests in Sri Lanka. With an altitude above 2000 metres, the plateau sweeps to a robust 3169 hectares, sheltering flora and fauna varieties that may be found nowhere else on Earth. As the tributary of Belihuloya, Bakers Falls, thunders down rocks, you'll head along the 9-kilometre trekking path across frost-covered grass to feel the icy-cold wind against your face. You may even gaze down World's End, a head-spinning 1,100-metre drop towards the southern end or drive carefully through herds of sambar deer, shy to human touch and birdlife chirping across the plains. If you're cautious enough you may be greeted by the sights of a grunting wild boar, a pouncing fishing cat, otters or even the Sri Lankan Leopard!

Afterwards, you'll return to the hotel where you'll be collected in the afternoon to commence sightseeing in Nuwara Eliya. Get your camera ready as you wind down misty steep roads that twist through lush green blankets of tea bushes in a cool climate. Augmented by an English countryside atmosphere, the city of light is studded with colonial bungalows, hedgerows and one of the finest 18-hole golf courses in the world. A hike through the green grass and red brick walls should present breathtaking views of a buzzing countryside hamlet. Enjoy driving through the green valleys of the hill country that are pierced by endless waterfalls and dotted by tea pluckers draped in bright-coloured saris, or rent a bike for a gentle ride along the banks splashed by the waters of Lake Gregory before returning to the hotel.

On an easy hike up the peak, you'll pass through lush green tea plantations, waterfalls and paddy fields before experiencing a breathtaking panoramic view. Here, you will have the chance to learn a bit about the local agricultural systems and simple way of life in the countryside. Along the way, you will witness several types of beautiful birds, butterflies and charming little waterfalls before reaching the end of the trail where the Belihuloya River meets the Samanalawewa reservoir.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with two monsoon seasons so there is a lot of confusion about the best time to visit. The weather doesn’t run like clockwork here! However, there will rarely be weather so dramatic that it will stand in the way of a brilliant holiday with plenty of warm weather and sunshine. The temperature is constant at around 27°C on the coast, both in the air and the water!

We do not arrange seat selection. It is essential to highlight that some airlines do not allow pre-selected seats. We strongly suggest you contact the airline directly with seating allocation requirements and/or arrive at the airport earlier to arrange your seating. While we do not add frequent flyer member details to bookings, you can do this directly with the airline once you have your flight information.

Passport Validity
Customers must provide valid passport details either at the time of purchase or no later than 45 days before the departure date. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the booking. Customers will be responsible for any costs and fees incurred in this instance.

It is your responsibility to notify us of any dietary requests/requirements. Fitness Level Required
A moderate level of fitness will be required. Moderate is described as may involve more physical activity, including biking, longer day hikes or extended walking and standing, low-altitude treks, and water-based activities such as canoeing or low-grade kayaking. Guests using any walking aid other than a walking stick would be advised to reconsider as surfaces may be uneven.
Please note: If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider before purchase/travel.

Gratuities/Tipping

Gratuities (tips) are not included for the services of the tour leader (when available) and driver throughout the tour. The recommended tip is 2000 LKR per person per day. This covers the guide/leader and the driver and will be collected on tour.
Please note: Tipping for services provided is always a matter of personal discretion; however, please be aware that many locals consider tipping part of their normal remuneration, and they may approach you for payment; there's no need to be intimidated by the request.

Sightseeing
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Shopping
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts. Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

A tourist visa for Sri Lanka is a strict requirement if travelling on an Australian Passport. You will be able to start your Visa application process once you receive your final travel documentation approximately 6 weeks before departure.
Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.
Please note:
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
