Today many of the restored miner’s houses serve as shops and restaurants. Bourke’s Luck Potholes are strange deep cylindrical cavities formed by river erosion and floodwater. Day 14 Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

This morning, arrive at Victoria Falls Station. Check out from the train and walk across to the Victoria Falls Hotel (luggage can be stored on the train). Meet for a walking tour of the village and the falls with lunch. The little station of Victoria Falls was first reached by railway in June 1904. Old colonial buildings, bougainvillea and palm trees against the backdrop of the Victoria Falls Hotel form a charming oasis of soft sweetness after the rugged dryness of the landscape.

The Victoria Falls is one of nature’s great revelations on a par with the Grand Canyon, Mount Everest and an erupting volcano. It is believed that there have existed no less than seven different Victoria Falls over the past two million years. These cascades correspond to the lower gorges of the Zambezi. The present falls is wearing from Devil’s Cataract northwards, eroding the softer material behind the present basalt base of the falls. When eventually all the soft matter has been removed, the Victoria Falls will move back, a fresh gorge will yawn, and where the falls are now will become a new site for tourists.

Although just over a mile long (1.7 kilometres), the falls are broken up by various small islands, including Livingstone Island. At their deepest, the falls are 108 metres deep at Rainbow Falls.

Return to the Victoria Falls hotel to freshen up, then in the late afternoon, you will be picked up and transferred to the jetty for an exciting Zambezi Sundowner Cruise. The Zambezi Sunset Cruise is a superb way to relax and enjoy the spectacular beauty of the Zambezi River. Keep your eyes peeled to spot the variety of game; including hippo, crocodile and elephants, as well as the many different bird species.

Day 13 Panorama Route, South Africa

This morning, enjoy breakfast served in the dining cars before embarking on a full-day tour of historical areas Pilgrim’s Rest, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and Graskop. The Graskop viewing lift (not included) descends 51 metres down the face of the gorge into the forest below where wooden walkways and suspension bridges meander along a 600 metre trail through the indigenous forest with an interactive exhibit.

Pilgrim’s Rest is a living museum and declared a National Monument. Gold was discovered in this area in 1873 attracting 1500 prospectors. Today many of the restored miner’s houses serve as shops and restaurants. Bourke’s Luck Potholes are strange deep cylindrical cavities formed by river erosion and floodwater. Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve has the most spectacular viewpoints overlooking South Africa’s Lowveld, so named because it is much lower than the high escarpment along which the Panorama Route runs.

Then, return to the train in Mbombela (140 kilometres) in time for dinner before departing for Pretoria.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Johannesburg Area:
Johannesburg is situated on the highveld plateau and has a subtropical highland climate. The city enjoys a sunny climate, with the summer months (October to April) characterised by hot days followed by afternoon thundershowers and cool evenings, and the winter months (May to September) by dry, sunny days followed by cold nights. Temperatures in Johannesburg are usually fairly mild due to the city's high elevation, with an average maximum daytime temperature in January of 25.6°C, dropping to an average maximum of around 16°C in June. The UV index for Johannesburg in summers is extreme, often reaching 14-16 due to the high elevation and proximity to the equator.

Victoria Falls:
In the area of Victoria Falls, the climate is subtropical, with a mild and dry winter from mid-May to mid-August (during which, however, nights are cold), and a hot, muggy and rainy summer from mid-November to mid-March. The rains occur in the form of downpours or thunderstorms. Between September and November, before the rainy season, there is a hot period, which is in fact the hottest of the year, with temperatures easily reaching 35°C, and sometimes up to 40°C, even though the humidity is not as high as in summer. October is the hottest month of the year. On the contrary, in winter, when during the day the weather is nice, the temperature at night may approach freezing (0°C).
Please note: The amount of water at Victoria Falls (waterfall) will depend on the seasonality.

Eswatini:
In Eswatini, temperatures typically range from a mild 15 to 25 degrees Celsius during the winter months of May to August. The summer season, which spans from November to February, brings warmer temperatures ranging from 20 to 35 degrees Celsius. Overall, Eswatini experiences a subtropical climate, with cooler temperatures in the highland areas and warmer conditions in the lowlands.

Pretoria, located in South Africa, experiences a subtropical climate characterised by hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures typically range from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, with occasional spikes reaching higher. Winters are generally mild, with temperatures averaging between 5 and 18 degrees Celsius. The city also sees a distinct rainy season during the summer months, contributing to its lush vegetation and vibrant landscapes.
