Tour the medieval old town centre of Marktplatz and 12th-century Gothic cathedral, which contains the tomb of the 16th-century Dutch scholar, Erasmus. The heart of the city beats in Basel’s well-preserved, romantic Old Town: its narrow streets and hidden squares hold more than 300 fountains that are just as charming as its many centuries-old buildings and eye-catching sights.

In the afternoon spend some free time at the famous Christmas Markets of Basel.
Basel has three main Christmas markets: the largest is on Barfüsserplatz in the old town, a newer market next to the cathedral on Münsterplatz, and a smaller market on the right bank of the Rhine on Claraplatz. The markets are within easy walking distance of each other and impress with beautifully decorated shop windows and buildings. Marvel through the many stalls that sell Christmas-related crafts and items as well as typical Swiss specialties such as raclette (melted cheese) with potatoes and Flammkuchen (thin pizza) from neighbouring Alsace. Most afternoons the scent of gingerbread, roasted almonds, and mulled wine fills Bern’s festively decorated alleyways. Follow your nose and you will find inviting markets and small winter paradises on various squares in the old town of Bern, a unique Christmas experience.

The Bern Starsmarket boasts a rich array of traditional craftsmanship, lifestyle items and modern design. Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.
Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.
