Germany’s a country where it’s not just okay to have a fetish, it’s celebrated. In cities like Berlin, you can fly your freak flag as high and proudly as you like. Whether your kink is David Hasselhoff tunes or nude tiddlywinks, there’s a good chance you’ll find your tribe in Germany.
Take the V8 Hotel in Stuttgart – built as a shrine to the automobile, petrol heads from all over the world flock to its whacky rooms each year, and mix with others car fanatics while they’re there.
From the suite designed to feel like you’re staying in a mechanic’s workshop (albeit a very comfortable and clean one) to the room with a petrol station motif (complete with a “Herbie The Love Bug” bed), to the penthouse located in the old air traffic controller’s tower, the V8 Hotel is proof that if you’re bold enough to build it, they really will come.
at least you can get drunk, while your automobile-obsessed partner drives you insane with facts
“The building was originally the first airport of Stuttgart,” says Simeon Schad, the hotel’s manager. “Across the road, we have the Mercedes Benz factory, and the Porsche factory is nearby, so it’s not surprising that all our guests are here to enjoy seeing one sort of car or another.”
Regularly voted one of the most unusual hotels in the world, the V8 has got something for everyone… as long as you really like cars. For everyone else, there are five restaurants onsite and a small brewery too, so at least you can get drunk, while your automobile-obsessed partner drives you insane with facts about the car museum next door.
Cashed-up hoons are a niche audience, but one obviously worth catering for, because the second V8 hotel opens next year. “It’s very popular,” says Schad. “On the weekends there are a lot of tourists who come to enjoy this place.”
