Your Guide to the Globe

Bollywood Life

There’s nothing more uplifting than a Bollywood film. Jam-packed with singers, dancing, emotionally-charged scenes and loads of costume changes, they’re a spicy mix of social themes and whimsy. Glittery, and often involving a grand-scale wedding, a Bollywood blockbuster has the ability to immortalise a location. The Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur is one such place.

The Film: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Translated as ‘This Youth is Crazy’, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a 2013 romantic drama which has become one of the highest grossing Indian films of all time. It’s a typical ‘shy girl meets not-so-shy boy who opens her to the world and love, or so he though’ plot-line. Both the lead characters resist love – Naina not wanting her heart broken, and Kabir not wanting to sacrifice anything for his career despite the obvious sparks flying.

I want to fly Naina. I want to run, I even want to fall down! I just never want to stop.

The Location: Udaipur

Udaipur, set amongst the Aravallo Ranges of Rajasthan, is known for its lavish royal residences and is regarded as one of the most romantic cities of the world.

The Hotel: The Oberoi Udaivilas

The Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur was the majestic location for the big fat Punjabi wedding of Kalki Koechlin in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. The royal dome-styled architecture resplendent on the banks of Lake Pichola, makes it the perfect place to live out your Raj fantasies. Cocktails on the terrace, a spin in a vintage car from the House of Mewar – this is grandeur personified.
