This adventure combines three of New Zealand’s most iconic rail experiences with free time at leisure to explore Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. Begin your journey aboard the Northern Explorer, travelling from Auckland to Wellington. This route allows you to soar over the icy mountain streams of Ruapehu, meander alongside the white cliffs of Rangitikei, and cling to the cliffs on the Kapiti Coast. The Northern Explorer journey is a perfect introduction to the diverse beauty of New Zealand’s North Island.

Embark on the Coastal Pacific Train, which takes you along a scenic route between mountains and sea. This leg of the journey provides spectacular views of the Kaikōura Coastline, a renowned hotspot for marine wildlife and whale watching. You’ll also pass through the beautiful Marlborough Sounds, known for their tranquil waters and green, forested hills. The Coastal Pacific is a feast for the eyes, capturing the raw beauty of New Zealand’s coastal regions.

Next, the TranzAlpine train awaits. This journey through the Canterbury Plains and over the Southern Alps offers some of the most dramatic scenery in New Zealand. The route traverses lush beech forests and crosses the mighty Southern Alps. On the TranzAlpine, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into Middle Earth, surrounded by some of the most awe-inspiring natural beauty the country has to offer.

A scenic crossing on the Interislander Ferry is yet another highlight. Sailing between the North and South Islands, you’ll experience the breathtaking beauty of the Marlborough Sounds from the water.
