Overview

Travel north and experience a once-in-a-lifetime voyage visiting picturesque cities, quaint towns, breathtaking fjords and abundant marine wildlife in The Netherlands, Norway, Iceland & Scotland.

This cruise deal takes you to Amsterdam, a city known for its arts scene, elaborate canal system and narrow houses. You’ll spend two nights at leisure in this capital city before your cruise. Here you could visit the Museum District, where the legacy of Rembrandt, Van Gogh and other immortal artists reside.

Jump on board the ‘MS Rotterdam’, Holland America Line’s newest cruise ship. This grand vessel offers a refined cruising experience across the world's oceans. Guests indulge in many entertainment options, from Broadway-style shows to culinary delights by renowned chefs. Enjoy delicious meals from The Dining Room, New York Pizza, Lido Market, Dive In Grill and many more. The ship boasts spacious staterooms, each designed for comfort and relaxation. Whether exploring exotic ports of call, unwinding in the onboard spa or lounging by the pool, this ship ensures an unforgettable journey.

Your first stop is Norway’s Ålesund, destroyed by fire in 1904 and rebuilt entirely as an Art Nouveau city. Then, for the next six nights sail around Iceland, a nation of captivating landscapes and warm people. Start in Akureyri, a city that overlooks its fjord, Eyjafjörður. Travel west to Ísafjörður, a charming exploration hub for the stunning Westfjords peninsula. At the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, reach the picturesque fishing village of Grundarfjørdur, and take in the beauty of the stunning Kirkjufell Hill – or ‘Church Mountain’ – before arriving at the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik. Exploring this city will always result in a surprising find: from the Punk Museum, as chaotic as its subject, and the popular Sun Voyager sculpture, to the iconic 74-metre-high Hallgrimskirkja Church, the city packs more landmarks than you’d expect. In Heimaey Island, go back to 1973, when a volcanic eruption changed the coastline forever. Finally, end the Icelandic part of this trip in Seyðisfjörður, where puffins, whales and other plentiful marine wildlife abound.

The end of your cruise will take you to Scotland. In the Highlands, see the rugged terrain and get acquainted with its rich Celtic culture, visiting ports near Inverness, the famed Loch Ness, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Finally, return to Amsterdam via Rotterdam, for a final night in the Netherlands before returning home.

This package includes return international full-service flights, a 14-night cruise with Holland America Line, 3 nights of 4-star hotel accommodation in Amsterdam and 41 meals, plus a long list of memories and experiences to last a lifetime.

Tailor your travel experience! Add extra days pre or post-tour in Amsterdam to your itinerary, or upgrade your cabin at checkout.

Day 6 Ålesund, Norway

Arrive: 08:00
Depart: 17:00

Ålesund, a quaint fishing town of approximately 65,000 inhabitants in western Norway, has been called the country's most beautiful city. A fire in 1904 destroyed much of it, resulting in the town being rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style — also known as Jugendstil — that was popular around the turn of the 20th century. A year after the fire, Norway gained its independence from Sweden, which led to a campaign to build a 'Norwegian town' to mark the creation of the new nation.

The colorful buildings feature castle-like turrets and spires with intricate facades of ornamental flowers, gargoyles and Viking-inspired decorations.

Bordering the Norwegian Sea, this area is also famous for its mountain ranges and fjords.

For those looking for a more active visit, Ålesund offers great hiking, mountain biking and kayaking. One of the highlights is climbing the 418 steps that lead up Mount Aksla for a spectacular view of the city and the Sunnmøre Alps. Nearby is the Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its beautiful waterfalls.

Ålesund is also home to Atlanterhavsparken, or the Atlantic Sea Park, one of the largest aquariums in Europe (charges may apply).

Day 8 Akureyri, Iceland

Arrive: 10:00
Depart: 18:00

Often described as the capital of north Iceland, the country's second-largest city is both vibrant and pretty, and serves as an ideal hub for exploring the incredible landscape that surrounds it.

Located at the head of a 60-kilometre fjord — the country’s longest — and surrounded by snow-streaked mountains, Akureyri was originally settled in the 9th century and was first officially mentioned as a city in the 16th century. Today, it boasts a population of around 19000, a scenic harbor and an array of interesting shops, buzzy cafés and upscale restaurants. Its main sights include the Akureyri Church, a wonderful botanical garden (founded in 1912) and the fascinating Akureyri Museum.

From here it’s possible to explore some of the country’s most memorable landscapes, starting with Akureyri's own fjord, Eyjafjörður, where you'll find several museums (including the Icelandic Folk and Outsider Art Museum), fishing villages like Grenivík and plenty of dramatic mountain scenery. Further afield are the island of Grímsey, the volcanic wonderland of Lake Mývatn and a whole host of waterfalls, gorges, churches and saga sites.

Scenic Cruising - Eyjafjörður:
Eyjafjörður, which translated to English means 'Island Fjord,' is one of Iceland’s longest fjords. Lined by peaks that descend to the water’s edge, it runs some 60 kilometres long and is located roughly in the middle of the country’s northern coast. Hydrothermal vents surround the fjord and the small island of Hrísey sits in the middle of it. Inhabited since the 9th century, Hrísey was long the home of a herring processing facility, though today it is better known as a bird sanctuary.

Overnight: Holland America 'MS Rotterdam'

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 9 Ísafjörður, Iceland

Arrive: 08:00
Depart: 17:00

Bordered on three sides by dramatic mountains that form a natural harbor, the idyllic town of Ísafjörður — population 2,700 — serves as a charming exploration hub for the surrounding Westfjords peninsula. Settled since the 16th century, and traditionally dependent on fishing as its main source of income, its streets are today lined with old wooden houses interspersed with occasional shops, restaurants and cafés.

Despite its low-key atmosphere, Ísafjörður offers plenty to do, from visiting local museums and enjoying a game of golf, to hiking, biking and kayaking around the town and harbor. The town also hosts several notable events, such as Iceland's oldest cross-country ski race, the mud-football European Championships and a classical music festival, Við Djúpið.

The rugged and remote Westfjords offer many more attractions. A daily summer ferry (not included) transports visitors to the scenic Hornstrandir Nature Reserve and to Vigur, an island that's home to many protected bird populations. Follow the region’s striking coastline and you’ll find snow-streaked mountains, waterfalls and beaches.

Overnight: Holland America 'MS Rotterdam'

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 10 Grundarfjørdur, Iceland

Arrive: 08:00
Depart: 17:00

Quaint fishing villages are ubiquitous on an Iceland cruise, but Grundarfjørdur, Iceland is special. It’s on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, a piece of land that juts out to the sea in Western Iceland.

Black-lava beaches, crystalline waterfalls and massive glaciers are found on this long stretch and Grundarfjørdur is a good place to jump on a tour to these natural wonders. (Additional charges may apply).

Kirkjufell, the town’s landmark and ever-present backdrop, is purportedly the most photographed mountain in the entire country. Its fantastical good looks even landed it a role in Game of Thrones. Snapping a hundred pictures of the mountain is tempting, but there’s much more to do on an Iceland cruise to this area. Sit in a steaming hot spring, surrounded by natural beauty and let your worries wash away. See how petrified shark meat is made at the Shark Museum in nearby Bjarnarhofn. Or watch puffins pad around on sea cliffs from a boat tour off Melrakkaey Island. An Iceland cruise is filled with adventure, no matter what you do. Please note: These activities are not included.

As part of your cruise to Iceland, sample some local fare. Start off the first day of your cruise Icelandic-style with a filling breakfast of oatmeal or thick and creamy yogurt called skyr. Iceland hot chocolate is amazing, everywhere you go and plokkfiskur (fish stew) is a hearty comfort food after a day of exploring. (Not included)

Overnight: Holland America 'MS Rotterdam'

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 11 Reykjavik, Iceland

Arrive: 07:00
Depart: 19:00

Laid-back and effortlessly cool, the world's most northerly capital, Reykjavik, is like nowhere else on earth. With geothermal water pumping through its veins and a staggering backdrop of gnarly lava fields, majestic glaciers and rainbow-colored houses, Reykjavík is famous for its natural wonders and dramatic scenery.

What is less well known is that the diminutive Icelandic city has cultural offerings to rival many destinations twice its size. During your stop on a cruise to Iceland, enjoy one of the many shore excursions like bathing in the Blue Lagoon or take a tour of one of many world-class museums or art galleries. Additional charges may apply.

During the evening relax at a cozy café or a bar. A thriving food scene showcases traditional Nordic cuisine, as well as modern and international trends, and the city’s creative output is in high gear with internationally acclaimed designers, musicians and artists.

Overnight: Holland America 'MS Rotterdam'

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 12 Heimaey, Westman Islands, Iceland

Arrive: 07:00
Depart: 15:00

Some 4,500 people live on Heimaey, a 13-square-kilometre island off the southern coast of Iceland.

It's mentioned in some medieval Icelandic sagas and was attacked in a Turkish raid in the 17th century, but events that took place on January 23, 1973, really put Heimaey on the map. On that day, the island’s inhabitants woke up to an earthquake and plumes of ash from the volcano Eldfell, followed by lava flows. Most residents were evacuated, while a few remained to defend the harbor by spraying ocean water on the hot molten lava. When the eruption subsided almost six months later, the island had grown by 2.2 square kilometres and half of the town had been destroyed — but the harbor had been saved. Most of the island’s residents returned, and in the years since, Heimaey has become known as a dramatic microcosm of Iceland’s remarkable geological activity.

The 1973 eruption is the focus of the fascinating Eldheimar museum; among the exhibits is a house that, as in Pompeii, was engulfed in ash. A circumnavigation of the island offers yet another perspective on Heimaey's remarkable geological history and its present.

Overnight: Holland America 'MS Rotterdam'

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 13 Seyðisfjörður, Iceland

Arrive: 08:00
Depart: 17:00

The lush valleys and dramatic waterfalls of Seyðisfjörður are some of the most picturesque sights on Iceland’s east coast.

At the head of the fjord sits the colorful, lively town of Seyðisfjörð with a thriving art and music scene thanks to the LungA Art Festival and concerts in the landmark Blue Church each summer. The Skaftfell Center for Visual Art, open year round, exhibits the work of young artists and also has a popular bistro and a bookstore.

Seyðisfjörð was founded in the 19th century by Norwegian settlers, who built some of the brightly painted wooden buildings you see today.

The town, population 700, has kept its connection to the European mainland: It's the only port in Iceland that regularly sees passenger ships from Europe, through a ferry service to and from Denmark and the Faroe Islands.

The residents in the area surrounding Seyðisfjörð are more likely to be wild reindeer — originally imported from Norway, they're the only such animals in Iceland — and arctic foxes, while seals and porpoises swim along the coast.

Overnight: Holland America 'MS Rotterdam'

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 14 Cruising

Enjoy a day at sea to explore the 'MS Rotterdam', or simply find a nice place to relax and watch the world go by as you cruise toward your next destination.

Overnight: Holland America 'MS Rotterdam'

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 15 Invergordon (Inverness), Scotland, United Kingdom

Arrive: 08:00
Depart: 17:00

Welcome to the Highlands, the wildest region in the entire United Kingdom.

Inverness is considered the Highland capital and, while a very small city by international comparisons, it does offer more than a few hours of enjoyment and entertainment with first-class restaurants among its attractions.

Just outside Inverness is a trove of Scottish and Celtic history, myth and natural beauty amid unspoiled glens, mountains, lochs, rivers and more.

Most famous among the attractions is the legendary (and likely imaginary) Loch Ness Monster, though for the less frivolous traveler, the sites associated with Scottish history will hold more appeal. For example, the Culloden Battlefield. Additional charges may apply.

The port of Invergordon is only a short drive from charming villages such as Fortrose with its ancient cathedral ruins or Rosemarkie where the Groam House Museum (not included) will show you the remarkable prehistoric art of Scotland's aboriginals, the Picts.

Overnight: Holland America 'MS Rotterdam'

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 16 South Queensferry (Edinburgh), Scotland, United Kingdom

Arrive: 08:00
Depart: 23:00

History was made in this port, just across the Firth of Forth from Rosyth, when the future Queen Margaret of Scotland arrived around 1071. Her devout religious attitude established 'Queen's Ferry' as the place for pilgrims from abroad to alight on their way to St Andrews — Scotland's ecclesiastical capital in the Middle Ages. Margaret's legacy continues less than a dozen miles away at Edinburgh Castle. A key attraction up on the castle's rock is St Margaret's Chapel, believed to be the oldest section of the fortifications and the place where she worshipped.

There's more to Scotland's capital than the castle, though. Edinburgh proudly displays multiple exhibits on national and international scientific achievement at the National Museum of Scotland, as well as some fantastic works of visual art at the National Galleries of Scotland. (Charges may apply)

South Queensferry's moorings are also within an hour distance of Scotland's largest metropolis: the city of Glasgow. Transformed in many ways since the post–WWII days when it had a reputation for grime and crime, the city is among the most vibrant in the UK: It is Scotland's de-facto capital of modern culture, with the hippest DJs and most accomplished conceptual artists.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

A tourist visa is not required for Europe for stays up to 90 days (the UK up to 6 months) if travelling for tourism on an Australian passport.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.
Please note:
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.
