Day 8 Cruising Panama Canal

Today, you will make a full crossing of the Panama Canal.

At the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal, Colón evokes the old Panama of yesteryear with its historic buildings gradually being restored. Some 77 kilometres to the south, at the canal’s Pacific entrance, Panama City's glittering skyline of office towers and condominiums reflects the country’s dynamic present and future. As you voyage across the canal, an epic tale unfolds before you boasting engineering, ambition and courage.

At the end of your journey along the Panama Canal, you’ll reach Balboa, the town that sits at the Pacific entrance of the canal. Its namesake is Vasco Núñez de Balboa after the famed Spanish explorer who was the first European to see the Pacific from the New World. Balboa’s journey was historic, a legendary feat of the age of exploration. The construction of the canal that crosses the isthmus today was also a historic achievement as, to this day, it's the largest civil engineering project ever.

A journey from Colón, at the Caribbean end of the canal, to Balboa at its Pacific end, allows you to marvel at this world wonder. Along the way you'll also see colonial towns, historic fortresses and sanctuaries for Panama’s wildlife. Measured by miles, the journey along the canal is relatively short but it is one with an epic sweep. You will follow in the footsteps of giants from Balboa to the workers who built the canal.

Day 9 Crossing the Equator

The equator is an essential component of our planet’s geography, even though it’s just an imaginary line drawn on a map.

In addition to being the widest spot on the planet, this is also the planetary dividing line for the Coriolis effect which explains why cyclones rotate clockwise north of the equator and counterclockwise south of it. It’s also the place best suited for launching spacecraft because the gravitational pull gives rocket ships an extra boost out of the stratosphere.

For a bit of light-hearted fun, if you’re onboard a craft where any of the crew are crossing this imaginary line for the first time, you’ll likely witness a King Neptune (or Crossing the Line) ceremony. This ancient naval tradition puts newbies (or “Pollywogs”) through a series of pranks and tests to prove themselves worthy of being a son or daughter of Neptune, the Roman god of the sea.

Overnight: Holland America's Zuiderdam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 10 Manta, Ecuador

With your time at leisure, you could visit the city’s highly recommended archaeological museum (charges may apply) and walk along the Malecón pairs ocean views with cooling breezes.

Day 27 Papeete, French Polynesia (Overnight)

Arrive: 08:00
Depart: 05:00 (Next Day Departure)

When Captain James Cook first sailed to Tahiti in 1769, he and his crew all thought they’d found paradise. Cook hinted at it in his journals in coy language that would have been acceptable in his day. His men felt considerably less reserve and returned home sporting tattoos and stories of people who ate what fell from trees, all without much need for clothes.

Tahiti is ringed by a reef that turns the water shades of blue even sapphires can’t come near. Rivers flow down from its high peaks and the sun sets behind the neighbouring island of Mo'orea, outlining the mountains like a laser show.

Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, is a bustling business and government centre with black pearl shops on almost every corner.

Overnight: Holland America's Zuiderdam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 28 Mo'orea, French Polynesia

Arrive: 08:00
Depart: 17:00

Shaped like a heart and crowned with emerald-green spires, Mo'orea is easy to love. The Magical Island, as it's nicknamed, is celebrated for its untamed landscape and symmetrical side-by-side bays called Opunohu and Cook's. These islands are said to be the inspiration for the mythical isle of Bali Hai in James Michener’s Tales of the South Pacific. Its languid lagoon seems without end, wrapping this 132-square-kilometre isle in shades of liquid blue from pale aqua to intense turquoise.

Venture inland to the valleys and another aspect of island life becomes clear with crops that include pineapples, bananas, taro, sugarcane, coffee and cotton. Mo'orea has shopping, too, mainly for lustrous Tahitian black pearls and brightly patterned pareus (wraparound skirts).

Take to the water where dolphins and stingrays are known to glide through the waves alongside snorkelers and divers exploring the stunning undersea scene.

It can be hard to believe Mo'orea is just 20 kilometres from Tahiti’s bustling capital, Papeete. Wherever you head, you'll find the South Pacific you have dreamed of, moving to the leisurely pace of island time.

Please note: This port is accessed by tender boats. Boarding and disembarking tender boats may involve steps and uneven surfaces. While cruise lines strive to provide ease of access, accessibility options can vary at different tender ports. Passengers with mobility concerns are encouraged to inquire about specific arrangements and consider their individual needs when participating in tendering activities.

Overnight: Holland America's Zuiderdam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 29 Raiatea, French Polynesia

Arrive: 08:00
Depart: 17:00

Most first-time visitors to French Polynesia end up on one of the three best-known Society Islands of Tahiti, Mo'orea or Bora-Bora. Repeat visitors often head to the Tuamotu Archipelago or the Marquesas Islands to scuba dive, seek out traditional Polynesian culture or learn about the cultivation of Tahitian black pearls. One of the sleepier Society Islands, Raiatea, is located adjacent to Tahaa and within viewing distance of Bora-Bora.

Cruise lines have discovered the quiet allure of Raiatea, French Polynesia’s second-largest island, home to a flower so rare it grows nowhere else on Earth. Its landscape is dramatic and mountainous with its tallest peak topping ‎1,000 metres, fitting for a place whose name means "faraway heaven". Tahitians consider this their sacred island and a journey here will take you to sites associated with legends and lore.

Adventure seekers will find plenty of outdoor activities including hiking, kayaking, diving and exploring by horseback. Shoppers can enjoy browsing a handful of shops and the daily market in the port of Uturoa (charges may apply).

Overnight: Holland America's Zuiderdam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 30 Cruising

Day 31 Rarotonga, Cook Islands

Arrive: 08:00
Depart: 17:00

The Cook Islands are a South Pacific nation with a traditional Polynesian culture and governmental ties to New Zealand. Of the nation's 15 islands, Rarotonga is the youngest, geologically speaking, and it serves as the point of entry for most visitors.

The landscape hints at the relaxed lifestyle its 10,000 residents enjoy as there's only one main road, without a single stoplight, following the 32-kilometre perimeter. The island's most visible landmark is a towering granite pinnacle known as the Needle which rises from razor-backed ridges. Rarotonga’s other main calling cards are its Muri Lagoon, a spectacular patchwork of soothing blue hues, and its extraordinary people.

Cook Islanders have a passion for Polynesian drumming and dancing which they perform with an old-school intensity that gets even bystanders’ hearts racing. The singing at Sunday church services is equally inspiring.

The capital, Avarua, has fewer than 6,000 people and a handful of shops, restaurants and bars. While scooters are the primary mode of transport, the convenient bus line loops around the island in 55 minutes which simplifies independent sightseeing and trips to the beach (charges may apply). Sports activities range from leafy treks across the island to diving among lionfish and moray eels.

It’s an easy city to navigate on foot and the surrounding island can be explored equally easily with a car or motorbike, both of which can be rented locally.

Make the most of your day by heading to the water and taking advantage of some of the world’s finest snorkelling. Land options can include a round of golf or a cultural experience such as the Tongan ancient village. This ancient naval tradition puts newbies (or “Pollywogs”) through a series of pranks and tests to prove themselves worthy of being a son or daughter of Neptune, the Roman god of the sea.

Day 30 Papeete, French Polynesia (Overnight)

Day 31 Mo'orea, French Polynesia

Day 32 Raiatea, French Polynesia

Day 34 Rarotonga, Cook Islands

Located on the northern coast of Tonga’s largest island of Tongatapu, it’s a charming city with lively infrastructure that combines a slew of pleasant cafés and restaurants with historic churches and stunning beaches.

You could even visit the upscale eco-resort Fafa or the lower-key Makaha‘a Island, both can be reached by local ferry or even by kayak if you’re feeling adventurous.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.
