Internationally known chefs and fashion designers have made neighbourhoods like Ponsonby, Newmarket and Parnell world-class destinations for shopping and dining. You're never far from water attractions where it’s not unheard of for downtown workers to go kayaking in their lunch break. Day 4 Tauranga (Rotorua), New Zealand

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

The curved shoreline of the Bay of Plenty—known in Maori as Te Moana-a-Toi—is home to incredible surfing, white-sand beaches and New Zealand's only active marine volcano. Tauranga, with approximately 130,000 residents, is the largest city on the Bay of Plenty and the fifth largest in New Zealand.

Tauranga is also a great jumping-off point for exploring nearby beaches and Te Puke, the kiwifruit capital of the world, as well as a wealth of Maori cultural sites. The world-famous geothermal wonderland of Rotorua, nicknamed Sulfur City, has been a major Polynesian spa resort town since visitors first arrived in the late 1800s. In Maori, roto means lake and rua means two, but Rotorua actually comprises 18 lakes—plus an incredible redwood forest.

For the best views, take the gondola up to Skyline Rotorua, a recreation complex atop Mount Ngongotaha. Other day trips you can consider are a boat ride through the incomparable glowworm caves of Waitomo or an unforgettable tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata—a must for all Tolkien fans. Additional charges may apply.

Overnight: Holland America 'Westerdam' Ship

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 5 Napier, New Zealand

Arrive: 12:00 - Depart: 18:00

This is the Southern Hemisphere's answer to Miami Beach when it comes to Art Deco architecture. Napier has a perfect mix of natural and manmade beauty as well as a thriving food and wine scene. Surrounded by the rolling vineyards of the Hawke's Bay wine region and edged by pristine waters, Napier has attracted a host of culinary innovators that has put it on the foodie map over the past two decades. Nature lovers will also be drawn by this North Island city's scenic splendour and abundant wildlife.

Overnight: Holland America 'Westerdam' Ship

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 6 Wellington, New Zealand

Arrive: 10:00 - Depart: 18:00

New Zealand's cool little capital is located at the southern tip of the North Island, meaning it's blessed with a beautiful waterfront, fresh seafood and unpredictable weather. So famously tempestuous is Windy Welly that visitors quickly learn not to go outside without an umbrella and will spend more time than usual talking about the weather. Politics is a hot topic too, with government workers buzzing about the Beehive, as the distinctive Parliament building is colloquially known.

Wellington is also known for its culture and cuisine. Learn about Maori history and Kiwiana at Te Papa, the national museum; go behind the scenes of the Lord of the Rings movies made in Wellywood; and wash down a plate of chilled bluff oysters with a crisp sauvignon blanc at a Cuba Street restaurant. Additional charges may apply.

Overnight: Holland America 'Westerdam' Ship

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 7 Picton, New Zealand

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

Nestled within the picturesque embrace of its surrounding landscapes lies the charming and diminutive harbour town of Picton. With a population of merely 4,000 people, this quaint destination exudes a captivating allure with its delightful cafés and charming shops which offers visitors a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Picton also takes pride in its fascinating aquatic-themed museums including the renowned Edwin Fox Maritime Museum (not included). This captivating establishment is dedicated to the historic ship, Edwin Fox, which has gracefully traversed most of the world over its impressive 150-year existence. Enchanting and full of history, Picton invites travellers to explore its unique maritime heritage and relish the tranquil beauty of this small yet captivating town.

Overnight: Holland America 'Westerdam' Ship

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 8 Lyttelton (Christchurch), New Zealand

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

The South Island’s biggest city, Christchurch is now inextricably linked with the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, which levelled the planned city center and many historic buildings. The city has shown resilience and ingenuity by erecting new projects such as the Re:START mall, a shopping centre and public space made up of colourful shipping containers outfitted as boutiques and cafés. Deserted buildings and gaping holes left by the quakes have been replaced by pop-up restaurants, art installations and even a cardboard cathedral. In spite of the many original buildings lost, Christchurch maintains its classic English feel, with lush botanical gardens and Edwardian punting boats cruising along the Avon River.

Please note: your ship docks in Lyttelton, a small port town just 12 kilometres from the centre of Christchurch. You can access Christchurch by local bus, taxi, or from a Holland America shore excursion.

Overnight: Holland America 'Westerdam' Ship

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 9 Port Chalmers (Dunedin), New Zealand

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 18:00

Dunedin's prominence during the gold rush in the late 19th century resulted in many grand Victorian and Edwardian buildings. Thanks to the beautiful University of Otago, which is also the oldest in the country, there's a large student population to keep the city vibrant and modern.

You’ll still find Dunedin's heritage proudly on display from the magnificent Dunedin Railway Station and Larnach Castle which have been restored to their full glory, to the fascinating Toitu Otago Settlers Museum which provides a glimpse into the lives of early residents. Outside the city, the Otago Peninsula is lined with scenic beaches and is home to rare birdlife like the royal albatross and yellow-eyed penguin.

Please note: your ship docks in Port Chalmers, located 13 kilometres from the centre of Dunedin. You can access Dunedin by local bus, taxi, or from a Holland America shore excursion.

Overnight: Holland America 'Westerdam' Ship

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 10 Cruising Fiordland National Park

Every year, visitors flock to New Zealand in search of landscapes straight out of Middle Earth. They might find what they're looking for in Fiordland National Park, on the southwestern coast of the South Island. This stunning 12,000-square-kilometer park encompasses mountains, lakes, fjords and rain forests. The area was once the home of Maori hunters; later, European whalers established small settlements here. But mostly, this region has seen a notable lack of human activity—the steep peaks and wet landscape deterred all but the hardiest people. That changed around the end of the 19th century, when travelers discovered the beautiful scenery of Fiordland. The national park was formally established in 1952.

Countless plant and animal species find a haven here. Among the park's rare birds is the flightless takahe, thought for decades to be extinct until it was spotted in the area in 1948. The natural wonders continue offshore: Seals, dolphins and whales frequent these waters.

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

From your ship, stroll the historic waterfront, enjoying street entertainers and stopping into pubs. Two historic pubs are the Customs House Hotel, a waterfront fixture, and the Shipwright Arms Hotel, at Battery Point.

Browse Tasmanian Aboriginal art, including rare shell necklaces, paintings, prints, and more, at Art Mob Aboriginal Fine Art Gallery. It's next to the Henry Jones Art Hotel—a combination first-class hotel and gallery of Tasmanian visual and performing arts—which now occupies the harbour-front factories and warehouses of the 1820s. Additional charges may apply.

Blocks from the port, the Salamanca Arts Centre presents multiple artist studios, galleries, venues, and public spaces. Choose a memento, sip fair-trade coffee and savour baked treats at the café.

If you choose to venture a little further from the port, you might like to take the short, 21-kilometre trip to the summit of Mount Wellington. Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

New Zealand:
A tourist visa is not required for Australian passport holders.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.
Please note:
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
